News spread before “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” came out that the son of Aquaman (Jason Momoa) and Mera (Amber Heard) would be presented and then killed off in the story.
The reports were not true, though. The child is taken by Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) in the movie, but he makes it through the action-packed ending, in which the King of Atlantis fights one of his country’s most old and powerful ancestors.
As the release date of “Aquaman 2” in late December got closer, there was a lot of online chatter about what would happen to baby Arthur Jr. Many fans thought Black Manta would do something horrible like in the comics.
Well-known leaker @CanWeGetSomeToast said straight on X (formerly Twitter) months before the movie came out, “This baby is going to f*****g die, btw.” At a CCXP panel in Brazil in early December, even director James Wan was asked about this chance. He said, “We’ll see.” It would be dark there.
After a long production process that included multiple delays and reshoots, DC fans finally got to see how far Wan went with his follow-up. Things turned out much better for the Curry family, which was lucky. Fans of DC for a long time know that this wasn’t how it was in the books.

“Adventure Comics” #452, which was written by David Michelinie, Jim Aparo, and Jerry Serpe, shows Black Manta attacking Atlantis and taking Arthur Curry Jr. The bad guy locks the child in a machine that’s full of air because he knows that the child can only breathe underwater.
To save his son, Aquaman has to fight Aqualad, who used to be his apprentice. Despite his best efforts, Aquaman’s son dies at the end of the story. It was a sad time for cartoons because they were becoming darker and more cynical. Green Goblin killed Gwen Stacy four years ago.
Before that, Green Lantern and Green Arrow were dealing with real problems like drug abuse and poverty.
In the end, “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” doesn’t have the heartbreaking sadness that the comics do. At the end of the movie, Black Manta seems to be dead, and the Atlanteans win.
Arthur Jr. is reunited with his son, which is a happy finish for both the movie and the Curry family. Since this is the last movie in the troubled DCEU series, it might have been best that way.
