Where Is Steven Avery Now? Steven Allan Avery lives in the quiet town of Manitowoc County, Wisconsin. His life has been full of changes, turns, and surprises. Avery’s story has sparked debates about the criminal justice system and caught the public’s attention.
He was wrongfully convicted in 1985, got out of jail in 2003, and was then charged with murder in 2005. Here we are in 2022, and everyone wants to know, “Where is Steven Avery now?”
Steven Avery’s Life After Being Found Not Guilty
After 18 years of a 32-year sentence for a crime he didn’t do, Steven Avery was found not guilty by DNA tests in 2003. People who believed in justice were given new hope when he was freed, which led to a lot of talk about how flawed Wisconsin’s criminal justice system is.
After that, Avery sued Manitowoc County, its former sheriff, and its former district attorney for $36 million, saying that they wrongfully put him in jail and put him on trial.
But Avery’s life took more turns after that. In 2005, while his legal suit was still going on, he was back in the news when he was charged with killing Wisconsin photographer Teresa Halbach.
Even though his exoneration got a lot of press and led to changes in the state’s criminal justice system, Avery was still found guilty in 2007 and given a life sentence without the chance of parole.
Finding a Murderer and Brendan Dassey
The Netflix documentary series “Making a Murderer” from 2015 brought Avery’s murder trial from 2007 back into the spotlight.
In addition, the show showed how Avery’s nephew Brendan Dassey was arrested and found guilty of helping Avery kill Halbach. Dassey’s conviction, on the other hand, was challenged in court, and 2016, a federal judge threw out the case because of a forced confession.
The court case went on, and prosecutors in Wisconsin appealed the ruling. Even though Dassey’s lawyers tried hard, including sending a petition to the U.S. Supreme Court, the verdict was upheld in 2018. The people became even more interested in Avery’s story as the case went through many turns.
