Roger O’donnell of the Cure Reveals He’s Been Diagnosed With a Rare, Aggressive Lymphoma

Roger O’Donnell, the keyboardist for The Cure, has disclosed that he was given a diagnosis of a “rare and aggressive” kind of cancer.

On Sunday, September 1, O’Donnell, 68, revealed the news to his fans in a series of X posts, informing them that he discovered his diagnosis in 2023.

“I was diagnosed with an aggressive and extremely rare form of lymphoma in September of last year,” the musician stated. “After a few months of ignoring the symptoms, I went.”

O’Donnell, who began playing with the British rock group in 1987, described the surgery biopsy results as “devastating.”

He continued by saying that he had finished an 11-month course of treatment “under some of the finest specialists in the world, with advice and second opinions from the teams that had developed the drugs I was being given.”

The celebrity said that he received radiation therapy and that he is “fine and the prognosis is amazing” as a consequence of all of his treatments.

“We didn’t answer the door when the insane axe killer banged on it. He concluded by thanking his medical staff, friends, and family and advising people to be tested if they notice any signs. “Cancer CAN be beaten, but if you are diagnosed early enough you stand a way better chance,” he stated.

Lymphoma is a malignancy of the lymphatic system that fights infections and illnesses. It comes in various forms. The Mayo Clinic states that while symptoms vary according on the type of lymphoma that is growing inside the body, swollen, painless lymph nodes in the neck, groin, abdomen, or armpits are always present.

Hodgkin lymphoma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma are two of the different types of lymphoma. They both cause symptoms like fever, exhaustion, itchy skin, chest, abdomen, and bone pain, as well as abrupt weight loss that doesn’t correspond with a balanced diet or regular activity.

Which type of lymphoma O’Donnell had is unknown.

After his X posts went viral, the band member also published an Instagram carousel in which he was shown in a sequence of black and white photos with short hair. In the caption for the carousel, O’Donnell wrote, “The hair isn’t out of choice hahahah.”

The band declared at the end of 2023 that their long-term keyboardist will not be traveling with The Cure on their “Shows of a Lost World” tour across Latin America. The band posted on social media to wish O’Donnell “the speediest of recoveries” despite without providing a reason at the time.

The Cure, led by Robert Smith, the only original member still playing, initially experienced the impact of cancer in 2019 when former drummer Andy Anderson passed away after a fatal diagnosis of prostate cancer.
