Julianne Hough from DWTS Shares Her Experience of Coming Out as ‘Not Straight’

In 2019, Julianne Hough, a professional dancer on Dancing With The Stars, demonstrated remarkable courage by publicly discussing her sexuality and identity. She described this moment as one of the most “vulnerable and empowering” experiences of her life.

After years of introspection and conversations with her then-husband, Brooks Laich, she felt ready to share her story with the world.

After five years, Julianne is happy she took the chance. In the end, what counts is that the reality TV star feels more at ease with herself now.

Julianne Hough Described Her Coming Out Experience as ‘Uplifting’

In an extensive interview with Women’s Health, Julianne Hough came out, and she hasn’t turned back since.

She stated on The Jamie Kern Lima Show that “coming out is one of the most vulnerable and empowering things that you can do.”

She discussed how, while not being interested in seeing other people, she was embarking on a self-discovery journey while she was married to Brooks Laich at the time.

For me, it really felt like it doesn’t matter if you’re straight, gay, bi, or queer. It’s more along the lines of, “I love people, I don’t know what I’m drawn to, but I pick you,” and I guess I’m just learning what love is.”

Julianne continued, explaining that her realization that she wasn’t straight came from a shift in how she perceived people as she grew more at ease with herself, rather than from a sexual attraction to other people.

She described how she began to perceive people differently, noticing their hearts, beauty, and essence in a way that made her think, ‘Wow, I love people.’ She wasn’t sure if it was a sexual attraction or something else, but the experience of truly seeing people was a beautiful revelation for her.

Julianne Hough Discusses Revealing Her True Self to Brooks Laich

Julianne Hough and Brooks Laich

Julianne Hough recently disclosed that Brooks Laich, her ex-husband, had assisted her in getting over her traumatic childhood experiences. It took her years to recover from the horrific assault she had endured at the hands of a neighbor when she was just 4 years old.

Despite the fact that their marriage failed, Julianne is appreciative of Brooks for giving her a secure environment in which to recover.

But as she began to recover and gain confidence, she and Brooks started to grow apart, and she had already hinted that things would get serious back in 2019.

In 2019, she told Women’s Health, “I was connecting to the woman inside that doesn’t need anything, versus the little girl that looked to him to protect me.” “I thought, ‘Will he like this new version of me?'”

Growing more self-assured included coming out, and he was incredibly supportive even though their relationship was ending.

“You know I’m not straight, right?” I [told him]. And he said, “I apologize, but what?” I said, “I’m not.” However, I want to be with you.

“Now that I’m sorting everything out, I feel safe with my husband, and I don’t feel guilty or ashamed of saying things that I’ve been afraid to admit because of what I’ve been told or how I was raised.”
