In September, 2024, BFI Distribution will release Starve Acre, a disturbing British folk horror written and directed by BAFTA nominee Daniel Kokotajlo (Apostasy) and starring Matt Smith (House of the Dragon, Last Night in Soho, Doctor Who) and Morfydd Clark (Saint Maud, Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, The Personal History of David Copperfield).
A House Production, based on Andrew Michael Hurley’s award-winning 2019 novel Starve Acre and with original music by Matthew Herbert (The Wonder, Disobedience), the film premiered at the BFI London Film Festival 2023.
Tessa Ross, Juliette Howell, and Emma Duffy create A House Production for Access Entertainment, BBC Film, and BFI. Access Entertainment, BBC Film, and the BFI funded the film with National Lottery funds. Cornerstone sells internationally.
“Director Daniel Kokotajlo adds, “I’m a sucker for films that enchant you with their attitudes and strange sensibilities. Starve Acre and other English folk tales allow that. Horror isn’t the only thing that goes wrong. It may whisper and be sensitive, then hit you in the face with its oddity. This film was meant to evoke uneasiness. Making an audience apprehensive causes tears, screams, and chuckles. I call it cathartic fun. Starve Acre also explores the age-old notion that coming home to nature and regressing to infancy is a mistake. The movie removes the nostalgic rose-colored glasses and reveals to us horrible things, long-buried superstitions, waiting for us.”
When a couple of parents notice that their son is behaving in an odd manner, they unknowingly let dark and nefarious forces into their home, which in turn awakens a long-dormant ancient evil that is entrenched deep within the countryside.
