What Happened With Scottie Scheffler? Why Was Scheffler Arrested?

Scheffler entered at Valhalla this week as a big favorite, enjoying a period of dominance in the sport unprecedented since Tiger Woods’ prime. He started play Thursday having won four of his previous five tournaments, including the Masters, one of golf’s four major events, last month at Augusta National in Augusta, Georgia.

The soft-spoken Texan is an unlikely superstar. He became obsessed with the game as a child, hitting balls in the dark in northern New Jersey while his father, Scott, held a flashlight.

During Scottie’s childhood, the Schefflers relocated to Dallas, with Scott Scheffler staying at home and Scheffler’s mother, Diane, working as the CEO of a law business. Scheffler participated in a variety of sports throughout his childhood before settling on golf. He is not the only player in the family. His sister Callie attended Texas A&M.

He and his wife, Meredith, were high school sweethearts, and the Schefflers create a picture of a quiet life despite Scottie’s meteoric climb to prominence, which began in 2022 with his first Masters win. The trend has accelerated in recent months, with Scheffler widening his lead over world No. 2 Rory McIlroy.

Scheffler admits to being a homebody who likes playing board games and relaxing with Instagram videos over basking in the trappings of success. He has won more than $61 million in his career, with $18 million coming this season alone.

The Schefflers welcomed their first child, son Bennett, on May 8, prompting Scottie to reflect on his life thus far.

Police allege that the 27-year-old Scheffler, the world’s top-ranked golfer, unlawfully bypassed the scene of an accident in Louisville, Kentucky, at approximately 6 a.m. While en route to Valhalla Golf Club, he caused the death of a pedestrian.

Scheffler was indicted on numerous charges, including negligent driving and second-degree assault of a police officer. He was apprehended and his photograph was taken prior to his release. Scheffler referred to the sequence of events as a “major misunderstanding.”

In time for his 10:08 a.m. tee time, he returned to Valhalla. Scheffler was introduced to a resounding ovation from the crowd, and he promptly birdied the par-5 10th hole, his first of the day.
