The Death of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis
Onassis’s last trip out of New York Hospital–Cornell Medical Center was on May 18, 1994. She died quietly in her Manhattan apartment the next night at 10:15 p.m., with her children by her side. She was 64 years old.
Her son, John F. Kennedy, Jr., told the media that his mother had died early in the morning, “surrounded by her friends and family and her books and the people and the things that she loved.” He then said, “We’re all grateful that she did it her way and on her terms.”
On May 23, 1994, her funeral Mass was held at the Catholic parish Church of St. Ignatius Loyola, where she had been confirmed as a teen and baptized in 1929. To protect her privacy, she asked that the event not be recorded by cameras.
The Mass took place a few blocks away from her home. Kennedy, their son Patrick, and their stillborn daughter Arabella were all buried with her at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. Bill Clinton, the president, spoke at her funeral.
