Fans of the Netflix teen drama Outer Banks don’t need to be told that the third season of the show has just come out. The show is like a fun mix of The Goonies, “The Hardy Boys,” and “Dawson’s Creek.” Since it started in 2020, loyal OBX-ers have loved the crazy plot twists and turns.

This season keeps tying up all the same loose ends and, hopefully, will lead the group of adventure-seeking Pogues from the sunny coast of South Carolina (known as “paradise on earth”) to a $400 million treasure hidden somewhere in the Bahamas.

The story starts with the gang being stranded on a desert island, which they quickly call “Poguelandia.” But will there be swallow dives off cliffs and exotic drinks out of coconuts? Is it crazy? There’s that treasure to find, and both old and new enemies to beat.

Where was Outer Banks Filmed?

Even though the third season of OBX takes place in places like Guadeloupe, Basseterre in St. Kitts, and Venezuela, it was actually filmed in Barbados and Charleston, South Carolina.

Barbados is used as the setting for everything from the “deserted” island Poguelandia to street scenes in Bridgetown, the port city and capital of the island country. Even though it hasn’t been officially confirmed, it looks like St. John Parish Church is the church that plays a big part in what happens on the island.

The romantic building in the Gothic style was built for the first time in 1645. Visit Barbados says that it has been destroyed by a hurricane and rebuilt more than once since it was first built. The building has been there since 1836.

This isn’t the first time the show has gone to Barbados to film. In the second season, the Camerons’ vacation home in the Bahamas was filmed on a Caribbean island where you can actually rent a mansion.

In real life, the Outer Banks are off the coast of North Carolina, but the movie was shot in Charleston, South Carolina. Jonas Pate, who helped make Outer Banks, first thought that the show would be shot in Wilmington, North Carolina, where Dawson’s Creek and The Summer I Turned Pretty were shot.

A 2016 anti-LGBTQ bathroom bill in North Carolina made it illegal to use a bathroom that doesn’t match the sex you were given at birth, so the production moved to South Carolina instead. In 2017, part of the law was taken away. In 2019, a deal was made that said no one can be stopped from using the bathroom that matches their gender identity.

In South Carolina, we see many Charleston locations from previous seasons, like the Camerons’ Tanneyhill estate, which is filmed at the historic Lowndes Grove. Some of our favorite characters travel from the made-up Outer Banks to the Charleston Museum as part of the storyline for this season. The real outside of the Charleston Museum looks a lot like what is shown on the show.

Either the Hilton Barbados Resort, where some of the OBX cast stayed or Charleston, a city in the United States, should be on your travel bucket list.

Outer Banks Show Avoids North Carolina Due to Transgender Bathroom Law

Many fans already know that Outer Banks takes place in a town in North Carolina with the same name. Because of North Carolina’s 2017 House Bill 2, also known as “the bathroom bill,” which says that transgender people must use the bathroom that matches their sex at birth, the producers decided to film the show in South Carolina.

Jonas Pate, the creator of the show and a native of North Carolina, agreed with the decision. He told The Fayetteville Observer, “This tiny law is costing this town 70 good, clean, pension-paying jobs and sending a message to those who can bring these jobs and more that North Carolina still doesn’t get it.”

Places like Pitt Street and The Wreck, where Kie works throughout the series, are real and can be found in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, in the Old Village Historic District. You can drive to the beach in 5 minutes, and Charleston Harbor isn’t too far away either. There, you can find the show’s most famous lighthouse, the Morris lighthouse.

You can also go to Shem Creek, which is on OBX and has a boardwalk and a place to launch boats. Even though Sarah’s house isn’t in the Outer Banks, you can see it at Lowndes Grove.

You can be a Pogue for a day no matter where you are going (of course, minus the dangers and plot twists that come with their treasure hunt).
