The world’s favorite prehistoric family (after the Flintstones, at least) is back in The Croods 2, a sequel to the hit animated movie that would also lead to a spin-off series that would only be available on Netflix. In The Croods: A New Age, all the main actors who played the kooky cave dwellers in the first movie are back, including Emma Stone. There are also a few new but familiar names in the voice cast.
In the sequel to DreamWorks’ 2014 Oscar nominee for Best Animated Feature, the Croods meet another family named the Betterman’s, who seems to be one step ahead of them on the evolutionary scale (or as their frequent boasts claim).
Some people are happy to be around such creative and unique people, but others are put off by the Darwinian challenges that these new friends seem to pose, to talk about the plot in a general way.
Are you curious about who the Croods will meet in this new part of their lives? After you see The Croods: A New Age, which is now in theatres as of Wednesday, November 25, 2020, you might need a reminder of who was who in the first movie.
In both cases, we can help with this in-depth look at 11 characters from the second Croods movie and the actors who play them. We’ll start with the most patriarchal of the patriarchs, at least in the time of the Neanderthals.
Nicolas Cage (Grug Crood)
It is funny to see an actor like Nicolas Cage, who is always looking for something new to add to his performances, voice a caveman in The Croods: A New Age who wants things to stay the same as much as possible, which puts him at odds with the Betterman’s.

Cage has also voiced characters in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Teen Titans GO! To the Movies, but Grug Crood is the only animated part he has returned in a sequel.
Catherine Keener (Ugga Crood)
Catherine Keener has been nominated for two Academy Awards and is best known for her work in live-action movies like Being John Malkovich and Get Out. She has also voiced a character in the animated superhero movie Incredibles 2, which came out recently.
In The Croods: A New Age, she plays Grug’s wife Ugga again. In the first movie, she learned how important new ideas are, which should help her get along with the Betterman’s.
Emma Stone (Eep Crood)
Emma Stone, who won an Oscar for her roles in La La Land, Birdman, and Superbad, will play Eep, Ugga and Grug’s oldest daughter, again in The Croods: A New Age. Eep is the actress’s biggest animated voice role to date. She has played the Australian Shepherd Mazie in Marmaduke, Lois Lane on Robot Chicken, and London Tipton’s dog Ivana in The Suite Life of Zack and Cody.
Clark Duke (Thunk Crood)
Clark Duke, who is known for playing Jacob in the Hot Tub Time Machine movies, Marty in the Kick-Ass movies, and the character named Clark on the last two seasons of The Office, also made his debut in a feature film with Superbad and provided the voices for several characters on Robot Chicken.
He gives Eep’s younger, more innocent brother Thunk a voice. Thunk probably has the most fun living in the world the Betterman’s have made for them in The Croods: A New Age.
Cloris Leachman (Gran Crood)
Cloris Leachman, who won an Academy Award, is one of Hollywood’s oldest and most famous living legends. She has been in 287 movies since 1947, and some people may know her best as Frau Blücher from Young Frankenstein, Mel Brooks’ parody/sequel to the 1931 horror classic.
Before The Croods: A New Age, the 94-year-old had roles in animated movies like A Troll in Central Park, The Iron Giant, and Adventure Time. In The Croods: A New Age, she plays Gran, Ugga’s mother, for the second time.
Ryan Reynolds (Guy Crood)
The guy is the newest member of the Croods’ family. In the first movie, Grug didn’t like Guy because he was always coming up with new ideas and was in love with Eep. It’s a good trait for the young man voiced by Ryan Reynolds.
He was nominated for a Golden Globe for making people annoyed in the first Deadpool movie, and he also voiced the main character in Turbo, a 2013 Dreamworks animated movie about a snail who enters the Indy 500.
Peter Dinklage (Phil Betterman)
Peter Dinklage is joining the cast of this animated series. He has voiced characters like Mighty Eagle in The Angry Birds Movie and its 2019 sequel, Captain Gutt in Ice Age: Continental Drift, and his Game of Thrones character Tyrion Lannister in the Telltale Games version of the show. In The Croods: A New Age, he plays Phill Betterman, the head of a family that says they are “better” than the Croods.
Leslie Mann (Hope Betterman)
In The Croods: A New Age, Leslie Mann plays Phil’s wife, Hope Betterman. This isn’t much of a stretch for Mann, whose real-life husband is director, Judd Apatow. Mann is used to playing the wife of young men.
For example, she was married to Paul Rudd in Knocked Up and This Is 40. In The Change-Up, she was technically married to both Ryan Reynolds and Jason Bateman. In George of the Jungle, she fell in love with Brendan Fraser, who played a man raised by apes.
Kelly Marie Tran (Dawn Betterman)
In The Croods: A New Age, Dawn Betterman, the daughter of Phil and Hope, gets along great with Eep when the two families meet. The young woman’s voice is done by Kelly Marie Tran, who also does the title role in Disney’s upcoming fantasy movie Raya and the Last Dragon.
However, her best-known role to date is Rose Tico from the first two Skywalker Saga movies, but especially from Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
Randy Thorn (Sandy Crood)
Even though Sandy steals the show, you might not know the name of the actor who plays the youngest Crood, Randy Thorn.
This is because, in addition to lending his voice to several other animated classics (most notably as Toothless in How to Train Your Dragon 2), he is also the sound designer for both The Croods movies. This is his main job in Hollywood and has won him two Oscars (for 1984’s The Right Stuff and 2004’s The Incredibles).
Chris Sanders (Belt)
You might not also know Chris Sanders, who plays Belt, Guy’s pet sloth, who spends most of his time wrapped around the waist of his human friend. Sanders has also done the voices of a few memorable animated characters, like the cute alien in Lilo & Stitch.
However, directing is his main job in that Disney movie, as well as in How to Train Your Dragon, the first Croods movie, and the live-action The Call of the Wild, which came out more recently.
