What is the storyline of ‘The First Omen’?
Father Brennan questions Father Harris about an occult conspiracy; Harris, scared, offers Brennan a photo of a newborn named “Scianna”. A falling pipe splits Harris’ head, killing him.
American novitiate Margaret Daino arrives at the Vizzardeli Orphanage in Rome in 1971 amid left-wing riots. She sees Cardinal Lawrence, Father Gabriel, Abess Sister Silva, nun Anjelica, and her novitiate roommate Luz. Luz brings Margaret to a disco, where they meet two males. Luz dances with one man and Margaret with Paolo before blacking out. The next morning, she has no recollection.
Margaret befriends neglected orphan Carlita, who has horrible visions. Father Brennan warns her that “evil things” will happen around Carlita. Margaret sees Carlita show Anjelica a sketch of a pregnant woman bound; afterwards, she self-immolates and hangs herself.
Brennan says that church radicals, anxious to reclaim power from secularism, want to construct the Antichrist and make Carlita his mother to scare people back to the church. A field trip riot causes Margaret to have demonic hallucinations. Sister Silva delays Margaret’s vows and orders her to leave Carlita. She sees Paolo, who urges her to “look for the mark” before a truck kills him.
Margaret enters Sister Silva’s office secretly. She finds an underground cavern and “Scianna” subject files. They show largely dysmorphic newborns with a three-sixes birthmark, with Carlita as the solitary survivor. Margaret gets arrested after seeing Carlita’s palate mark.
While reviewing the files, Father Gabriel frees Margaret and discovers another infant survived. Margaret sees the mark on her scalp and remembers being forcefully impregnated in a satanic ceremony the night she blacked out at the disco. Margaret was taken to Rome because Carlita is too young to conceive the Antichrist. the Devil must mate with his own children. When they leave to get the pregnancy aborted, another car hits them and Margaret’s womb swells.
Cardinal Lawrence, the conspiracy leader, greets her in a hospital bed. Cardinal Lawrence and the conspirators watch her have a cesarean and deliver a girl and a boy, the latter of whom is called the Antichrist. Another man with Paolo at the club is a conspirator.
Margaret stabs Lawrence while pretending to be complicit in asking to hold the baby but cannot kill him. Luz stabs Margaret as the conspirators run with the boy and burn the chamber to hide. Carlita rescues Margaret and her daughter, and Margaret sees a demonic jackal in the flames. American diplomat Robert Thorn receives the baby boy to covertly replace the kid his wife Katherine said she miscarried.
