Susan Lucci Explains Her Oddly Amorous Justification for Turning Down The Golden Bachelorette

Famous soap opera star Susan Lucci declined a role on The Golden Bachelorette, and she gave a very special—and endearing—reason for doing so.

Generations of daytime television viewers adore Lucci, who is currently 77 years old and breathtakingly beautiful, for her depiction of Erica Kane on All My Children, a character she played for an astounding 40 years.

The Golden Bachelorette, a spin-off of The Golden Bachelor, was formally ordered in February and is scheduled to premiere in the autumn on ABC and Hulu.

The Golden Bachelor’s Joan Vassos was “crowned the first leading lady” of the spin-off, Hulu announced on May 15, after her tenure was abruptly ended (much to the chagrin of fans):

The first leading woman of The Golden Bachelorette, a Golden Bachelor spinoff series that ABC says will premiere on Wednesdays at 8:00 p.m. EST this autumn, is officially Joan Vassos, the fan-favorite contestant from Golden Bachelor.

Though she was beloved by many fans during Gerry Turner’s inaugural Golden season, Joan’s time on the show was unexpectedly cut short due to a medical issue involving her daughter.

Susan Lucci’s Reasons for Refusing to Become the First “Golden Bachelorette”

Two adjectives could best describe Susan Lucci’s choice to not compete in the inaugural Golden Bachelorette season: Helmut Huber.

In late May, Susan first declared that she was a contender for The Golden Bachelorette. She also acknowledged that she watched The Golden Bachelor religiously, having been introduced to it by her assistant:

“I saw it. That night a few seasons ago was the first time I watched it. I got engaged right away. I was concerned. I was curious to learn more about these folks.”

Deadline stated in their report that they were unable to verify Lucci’s assertion. She did add that she was first given consideration for the show back then, but she didn’t elaborate on why she didn’t take advantage of the chance:

When they contacted my publicist to ask whether I would be interested in the job, I decided not to pursue it. Although I don’t use it, I enjoy watching. I’m a supporter.”

Susan talked more about the show, why it “wasn’t for her,” and the extremely beautiful and endearing reason she didn’t want to be the Golden Bachelorette in an interview published on July 8 in Entertainment Tonight.

Susan’s Late Husband Helmut Huber Remains Her True Love

Susan Lucci

1969 saw Susan Lucci wed Helmut Huber, one year before to her All My Children debut as Erica Kane.

Similar to Gerry Turner on Golden Bachelor, Susan is a widow; she lost her cherished spouse Helmut in 2022 after 52 years of blissful marriage. Her representatives released the following statement:

“To everybody who knew and loved him, the loss of Helmut [Huber] is immense. He was a remarkable friend, father, grandpa, and spouse. The family respectfully requests privacy during this extremely trying time.”

In her interview with ET, Susan covered a wide range of subjects. Regarding her earlier remarks regarding The Golden Bachelorette, the publication questioned “whether or not she is open to finding love again” in the wake of Helmut’s passing.

Lucci acknowledged that the true reason she wasn’t interested in the project was because of her love for Helmut:

“It would be really tough for the All My Children actress, who wed Huber in 1969 and lost him in death, to put herself out there again after meeting the love of her life at the young age of 23.

“You know, I can’t even begin to imagine how varied everyone is. Lucci, who previously revealed that The Golden Bachelorette casting producers had contacted her about appearing in the reality series, talked about dating once more.

“Never say never, but I just can’t imagine [it].”

While ET tempered somewhat, saying that dating is “not the path forward for her — at least not at this time,” Susan was clear about her sentiments for a “new love.” This illustrates the ongoing pressure put on widows and widowers to “get back out there.”

Susan, however, expressed gratitude for fifty years of marriage to the “love of her life” and implied that Huber was her one and only.

“Everyone experiences grief differently, and part of that is making the decision to get off the ground and go forward. Really, it’s best to move forward with your life.

The other thing is that I’m thankful and I know that this life is a gift from God; I’m not going to turn my nose up to it. And I’m really appreciative that Helmut is in my life and that I have his affection.”

Susan’s Adoration For Helmut Is Not Unshared

Though it might sound strange, Susan Lucci is not the only well-known widow who has recently acknowledged or reaffirmed her love for a deceased spouse, or who is continuously questioned in interviews about why she isn’t dating.

The singer Céline Dion stated in June that she goes to medical appointments with her late spouse René Angélil, who passed away in 2016. She went on to say, “I’m still married [to René]!”

Supermodel Iman paid almost exact homage to her late husband David Bowie, who passed away in 2016, in the same month that she made almost identical remarks about him. Iman described Bowie as “ever present,” adding:

“You know, whenever someone says, ‘Oh, your late husband,’ I’ve always been asked multiple times, and I always correct them. He’s my spouse. not my late spouse. He is always by my side.

It’s because of the influence he has had on my life. He was the ideal person for me, and I’m grateful that I got to meet him and have that experience in my life.

“And I hope everyone experiences that moment at least once in their life.”

Us Magazine released an article on May 31st concerning the decision of another well-known person to avoid dating after losing their spouse. Terri Irwin was the spouse of well-liked wildlife specialist Steve Irwin, who passed away unexpectedly in 2006.

Despite being young widower, Terri’s views on “new love” haven’t altered in the eighteen years following Steve’s untimely death. It’s interesting that the piece started out by framing her choice through the prism of The Golden Bachelor.

“Terri Irwin is aware that her late husband Steve Irwin is her soulmate and that no one else can compare.

“I’ve definitely found my happily ever after. And although the world is full of amazing men, can you see another Steve Irwin? I simply am unable to.

I would say something like, ‘It’s great that you’re a librarian and that the guy decimal system is awesome, but I have to go jump a crocodile.'” Ignore that.

Although Terri isn’t keen on reentering the dating scene herself, she takes pleasure in seeing others in their later years rediscover love, especially through shows like The Golden Bachelor.

Remarkably, in separate interviews, Céline, Susan, Terri, and Iman all mentioned many of the same things: that after the initial shock of losing a spouse subsided, they were more appreciative than grieving, that they sincerely wished everyone could experience that kind of love, and for Céline and Iman specifically, that they felt their partner’s presence all the time.

Maybe Susan Lucci should join Terri, Iman, and Céline for a reality TV spin-off of The Golden Girls instead of The Golden Bachelor.(Source)
