Day closes with flickering impressionistic dreams.
Loves trees and gardens, Hirayama pictures them. He takes analog photos of branches, leaves, and ‘Komorebi’ (木漏れ日) reflected sunshine while eating sandwiches under covered trees in a shrine grounds. His meticulousness and perfection are his pride.
Takashi, Hirayama’s young helper, is late, boisterous, and inefficient. Takashi rushes to finish cleaning the public toilet when Aya, a young woman, stops by. When his motorbike won’t start, he convinces Hirayama to let him use his van to go with Aya.
When Aya offers to house Takashi while she works at a females club, he exclaims that he is broke. Aya doesn’t know Takashi put Hirayama’s Patti Smith cassette in her handbag. On his free day, Hirayama does laundry, develops his tree photos, cleans his flat, buys a book, and eats at a restaurant where the proprietor tells him gossip. He hesitantly declines but hugs his sister farewell. Before departing, she asks if he cleans toilets for a living. He says yes. Hirayama cries driving away. When Takashi quits without warning, Hirayama fills his shift the next day. After entering his usual restaurant, Hirayama sees the owner cuddling a man. Hirayama runs for cigarettes and three canned highballs to sip beside the river. Hirayama’s restaurant friend requests a cigarette.
He claims that his ex-wife, whom he hadn’t seen in seven years, launched the restaurant the year after they divorced.
