Former Philippine Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Albert Del Rosario, Passes Away at 83

On November 14, 1939, in Manila, Philippines, Albert Ferreros del Rosario was born to parents Luis del Rosario and Amparo Ferreros. Gregorio del Pilar’s mother, Felipa Sempio, was the sister of his great-grandmother, Teresa Sempio. Judge Simplicio Sempio del Rosario, his grandfather, was a Malolos Congress representative.

Del Rosario completed his secondary education at New York’s Xavier High School and his undergraduate studies in Economics at New York University. He entered the Xavier High School Hall of Fame in 2006.

Albert Del Rosario’s Death

The U.S. Department of State has published a statement announcing del Rosario’s passing. The 83-year-old passenger died en route to San Francisco, according to a statement released by DFA.

The cause of the former Foreign Affairs Secretary’s death was not revealed in the announcement. The foreign ministry has said that Del Rosario was “a steadfast supporter of safeguarding and advancing national security and promoting the rights and welfare of Filipinos.”

Secretary of Foreign Affairs Enrique Manalo took to social media to pay respect to the late official, writing, “Albert was a consummate diplomat and an inspiring leader who oversaw the DFA with honesty and an unwavering dedication to the public service.”

According to a statement released by the Department of Foreign Affairs, the late ambassador was “a staunch advocate of protecting and advancing national security and promoting the rights and welfare of Filipinos.” He is primarily remembered for his role in the Philippines’ historic arbitration win over China over the disputed South China Sea.


Even after he had stepped down as DFA chief, Del Rosario continued to rail against Chinese incursions in Philippine waters and call on succeeding governments to maintain a strong defense of the country’s boundaries.
