We’re getting closer and closer to the release of The Little Mermaid, which is probably the most-anticipated Disney live-action remake we’ve seen in a while. Exciting!

Awkwafina plays the seagull Scuttle, and Jonah Hauer-King plays Prince Eric. The title role, Ariel, is played by singer and actress Halle Bailey. Here is what we know so far about the live-action Little Mermaid…

Release Date of The Little Mermaid

In May 2016, it was said that Disney was planning to make The Little Mermaid into a live-action movie. Since then, it’s been a long time since The Little Mermaid came out.

Two months after Halle Bailey posted on Instagram that she was done filming, it was announced that the movie would only be shown in theatres on May 26, 2023. Rob Marshall told Collider that the film won’t be done with post-production until March 2023. This is because of COVID and the film’s use of CGI.

Official Trailer For The Little Mermaid

Yes! At this point, there are several trailers. During the Oscars in 2023, the first full trailer for The Little Mermaid came out. This means that we can finally learn more about the plot and characters of the movie.

In the new trailer, Ariel, played by Halle Bailey, saves Prince Eric from a shipwreck, just like in the Disney movie. “Stop being so interested in people,” King Triton tells her when she wants to know more. While “Part of Your World” plays, we get full looks at all of Ariel’s outfits and makeup.

The second teaser trailer for The Little Mermaid came out on February 15, 2023, exactly 100 days before the movie’s release. This was done to celebrate Disney’s 100th anniversary and to show how close the movie was to come out. In the 30-second trailer, we see Halle as Ariel blowing kisses to a pufferfish and swimming among jellyfish.

We also get our first looks at four more mermaids (could these be Ariel’s sisters?) and Ariel and Prince Eric almost kissing in the famous “Kiss the Girl” scene. Near the end of the trailer, we also get a quick look at Ursula’s eyes and tentacles and hear her first evil laugh. Check it out for yourself!

Official Synopsis of The Little Mermaid

Walt Disney Studios’ official plot summary for The Little Mermaid said:

“The Little Mermaid” is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea, and while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric. While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land, but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy.

The plot of The Little Mermaid is not very mysterious. As with most of Disney’s other live-action remakes, the plot of this one is likely to stay pretty close to the original. The teaser already hinted at Ariel’s interest in the human world by using the well-known song “Part of Your World,” in which Ariel sings about wanting to be a part of the world beyond the water or the human realm. Fans will get to see how Ariel and Prince Eric deal with the problems that come up because they are different.

Who’s In The Little Mermaid Cast?

Fans wanted singer Ariana Grande to play Ariel, and there were rumors that Zendaya might do it. So, the fact that Zendaya got the part is a big surprise. On July 3, 2019, Disney’s official social media pages shared the news that Halle Bailey will play the title role of Ariel. Rob Marshall, the director, said of the young actress,

Bailey is well-known for the music she makes with her sister Chloe Bailey as Chloe x Halle. Since 2018, they have been nominated for five Grammy Awards. In her acting career, she became known for her role as Skyler Forster on the TV show Grown-ish. Bailey will also soon be seen in the movie version of The Color Purple, a Broadway musical.
