“My dad was boisterous, he was rough around the edges,” she recalls of her father. “He had a very huge heart and he loved being around the restaurant.”

With the 2008 financial crisis, the government established the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP), and in March of that year, Zucchero testified before a House subcommittee on it. Natalino’s, located in River North, was Zucchero’s sister establishment. In 2012, the eatery, unfortunately, had to close its doors for good.

His kid would taunt his father after he returned home from D.C.: “It was the only time an Italian American has gone before Congress and wasn’t indicted,” Chris Zucchero adds while laughing. “That was my dad talking through me; he wasn’t shy about saying what he thought, and he had a fascinating personality.”

Zucchero leaves behind a wife of 45 years, two children, and three cherished dogs, in addition to two siblings and in-laws.

Joseph’s beloved pets Jake, Mugsy, Bella, and Nero, as well as his mother, Rita (née Natalino) Grippo, father, Nicholas (Cookie) Zucchero, and father-in-law, Edward Eng, had all passed on before him. Joseph, a native Chicagoan, spent his formative years on the city’s Northwest side until relocating to Park Ridge in the late ’70s.
