Who is Gungi? In episode 6 of Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 2, we met Gungi, a young Wookiee Jedi who managed to escape Order 66. In Palpatine’s mind, the Clone Wars were the perfect way to catch the Jedi off guard; the Jedi were doomed from the start because war is inherently about establishing one’s power over others, and the Jedi do not want such things.
During the Clone Wars, the dark side rose to power when Emperor Palpatine issued Order 66, which led the clone warriors to turn on their Jedi commanders.
Estimating how many Jedi were killed during Order 66 is problematic. At the outbreak of the Clone Wars, there were around 10,000 practicing Jedi, but many were killed, and others left the Order because they could feel the Dark Side’s influence growing. Although, at the end of the Clone Wars, all of the servicemen and women serving had been targeted by the very clone troopers they had been in charge of only minutes before.
Upon the issuance of Order 66, the trap was finally shut, and many of the most powerful Jedi in history, including many who had already sacrificed themselves for their Padawans, were eliminated. Perhaps that’s why Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 2 episode 6 features Gungi, a young Jedi who appears to have survived Order 66.
A hasty youngling
Gungi was among the most talented and promising of the younglings. As a Padawan hopeful, he tagged along with Ahsoka Tano and Master Yoda to the planet Ilum for some grueling character trials. Gungi needed a green kyber crystal to construct his lightsaber, but first, he had to learn to control his impatience and pass a test.
Byrlark wood was used for the hilt of the lightsaber he eventually crafted. His first usage for it would be against the pirate Hondo Ohnaka, and then against General Grievous and the Separatist droids. After leaving Kashyyyk as a kid to become a Padawan under Tera Sinube, Gungi scrapped on his own to return to his people after Order 66.
When fighting with the Bad Batch, he displays the lightsaber skills and grit that Hunter praised him for when they were alone.
How Gungi Survived Order 66
Gungi’s survival after Order 66 is mysterious. It’s easy to imagine him being able to escape the clone troopers because he’s a Wookiee Jedi, a fearsome combination that may explain Lucas’ hesitation to pursue the notion.
Even if Gungi hadn’t grown up on Kashyyyk, his innate knowledge of the jungle and the Force would have given him an advantage if he were stationed there when Palpatine issued Order 66. It’s worth noting that the Jedi usually assigned tasks according to the abilities of the individuals involved.
Gungi may have become a Padawan, but by the time of Season 2, Episode 6 of Star Wars: The Bad Batch, he is completely on his own. His master was obviously not one of the few people who managed to avoid the destruction of their planet during Order 66.
Perhaps Gungi’s master, like so many others, made the ultimate sacrifice for their Padawan, but in the end, Gungi was on his own. He seems to have gone unnoticed for quite some time, despite having to do so by navigating the galaxy’s shadows. Given that Darth Vader and the Inquisitors were actively searching the galaxy for Jedi, this is very extraordinary.

The Force Sent Gungi Home To Kashyyyk, But His Fate Remains Unknown
Episode 6 of Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 2 reveals that Gungi started having dreams about Kashyyyk after being exposed to the Force. After all, hiding among their own people is the safest option for any Jedi. The Wookiees, being Jedi allies, would definitely agree with that statement. The Wookiees supported Master Yoda throughout the show and would gladly accept Gungi.
For the time being, Gungi’s Star Wars fate remains uncertain. It’s likely that Gungi fought against the Empire when it occupied Kashyyyk and enslaved the Wookiees there. Assuming that’s the case, the fate of his narrative is still tragic, as the Empire would surely unleash its full might against a Wookiee Jedi.
Even though General Han Solo of the Rebel Alliance freed Kashyyyk after the Emperor’s demise in Return of the Jedi, no such Wookiee Jedi was mentioned at the time. While Gungi may have made a comeback in Star Wars: The Bad Batch, he is not expected to make it through the Empire’s Dark Ages of oppression.
