Jinks Holton Death: According to her relatives, Virginia Jinks Holton, the widow of former Virginia Governor Linwood Holton, has passed away at the age of 97.

The late Republican governor of Virginia, A. Linwood Holton Jr., whose wife Holton was, called an end to “Massive Resistance,” the state’s systemic resistance to federal mandates to desegregate its schools in the 1970s.

Anne Holton, the first lady of Virginia and the wife of former governor and current U.S. Senator Tim Kaine, was her daughter. In a statement sent by Kaine’s office, Jinks Holton’s sister Anne and two brothers confirmed that their mother had passed away quietly at her Irvington, Virginia retirement community home.

Jinks Holton Death: How Did She Die?

Originally from Roanoke, Jinks Holton joined her husband Kaine and Anne Holton in 2006 to protest a proposed constitutional ban on same-sex marriage. A family statement confirmed that former Virginia first lady Virginia “Jinks” Rogers Holton had passed away at her residence on Friday morning. They put her age at 97.

She died on Friday morning at Rappahannock Westminster-Canterbury in Irvington, Virginia, surrounded by her family. However, the reason for death was not specified. After 67 years of marriage, she passed away a year after her husband.

The statement noted that Jinks Holton, as she was commonly called, worked alongside her husband to further “the family business: racial justice and civil rights for all Virginians.” Instead of opposing school busing, the Holtons enrolled their white children in schools with a large number of Black students.

According to the statement, Jinks Holton was a lifelong advocate of children’s causes and a regular volunteer on Habitat for Humanity builds, and she even worked to promote child nutrition in Virginia while the first lady.

She was fluent in several tongues and worked for two years in Belgium as a forerunner to the CIA, “running intelligence agents as the U.S. sought to manage the post-war complexity of Europe,” according to her relatives. When her parents asked what she did for a living, she lied and said she worked as a secretary in an embassy.
