On Tuesday, a family funeral for former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was held at a temple, just a few days after his murder shocked the whole country. Read on to find out more about the Shinzo Abe death.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe
Abe was the country’s longest-serving prime minister. Even after he left office two years ago, he was still a powerful figure. On Friday, he was killed while giving a campaign speech in the western city of Nara.
Hundreds of people, some in dark suits, lined the sidewalks outside of the Zojoji temple in downtown Tokyo to say goodbye to Abe, whose nationalist views drove the ultraconservative policies of the ruling party.

Shinzo Abe died at the age of 67. He was Japan’s longest-serving prime minister.

As a hearse carrying his corpse and widow passed past, the throng waved, snapped photographs, and yelled “Abe-san!” Abe bowed to the audience.
Only she, close family members, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, and party officials attended the temple burial.
The hearse toured Nagata-Cho, Abe’s Tokyo headquarters since 1991. More than 30 years. It then proceeded gently by the party headquarters, where top party MPs prayed, before going to Abe’s prime minister’s office.
Kishida and the other members of his Cabinet prayed and bowed to Abe’s body while it was in the hearse. Then, the hearse drove to a crematorium.
Two days after Abe’s shocking death, his ruling Liberal Democratic Party and its coalition partner won a landslide victory in the upper house, which is the weaker of Japan’s two chambers of parliament.
That could let Kishida stay in power until the next election, which is set for 2025. However, Abe’s death has opened up a time of uncertainty for his party. Experts say that there will be a power struggle on the part of the party that Abe led, which could make it harder for Kishida to stay in charge.

After Abe’s death, Kishida stressed how important it is for the party to stay together.
The Shooting of Shinzo Abe
Abe’s shooting also shook Japan, which is known as the safest country in the world and has some of the strictest gun laws in the world. Gun crimes in Japan are very rare.
Tetsuya Yamagami, the suspect, was taken into custody right away on Friday and is being held at a local prosecutor’s office while the case is looked into further. They can keep him in jail for up to three weeks while they decide if they want to charge him with a crime.
Tuesday, Satoshi Ninoyu, who is in charge of public safety, told reporters that he has asked the National Police Agency to look into the safety of political and business leaders.
Abe became Japan’s youngest prime minister at age 52 in 2006. His father had been a prime minister before him. He left office after a year because of his health, but he came back to power in 2012.
He promised that his “Abenomics” plan, which combines fiscal stimulus, monetary easing, and structural reforms, would bring the country back to life and get the economy out of its deflationary doldrums.
