Shotputter Payton Otterdahl of Team USA is engaged.
On Sunday, August 4, the 28-year-old Olympian proposed to his girlfriend, Maddy Nilles, in front of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. He posted on Instagram, saying, “In the meantime, in the City of Love…I love you forever, Maddy Nilles.”
Several pictures of the joyful pair cuddling in front of the well-known landmark were included with his endearing message, including one in which Otterdahl dipped his new fiancée as they shared a kiss.
Otterdahl came in fourth place in the shot put competition at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, one day before to the lovely proposal. Even so, Team USA won two medals: Joe Kovacs won silver and Ryan Crouser won gold with a throw of 22.90 meters. Rajindra Campbell of Jamaica won the bronze.
With his victory, Crouser became the first shot putter in Olympic history to win three gold medals in a row, according to Team USA.
After the competition on Saturday, Crouser told reporters, “Throwing a 16-pound ball is not easy on the body – throwing it as hard as you can, as far as you can beats you up.” “Winning three straight is proof of how much shot can really smash you up.
After the first round, Otterdahl had been in third place, but Campbell and Kovacs had past him. Otterdahl reportedly said afterward, “That’s just the reality of fourth place — it doesn’t feel good,” according to Team USA.
“Although I’m not happy with the performance, I accept the situation.” I wish we had been able to win; we were just not close enough.
Since the Games started in Paris on July 26, there has been quite a bit of romance around the 2024 Olympics. The same night, Chinese Olympian Huang Ya Qiong and her on-court partner Zheng Siwei defeated South Korea in the badminton mixed doubles final, Huang Ya Qiong also earned an engagement ring.
Men’s doubles player Liu Yuchen, Huang’s boyfriend and fellow Olympian, surprised her with a ring and roses shortly after the victory.
Huang said, “I am happy, happy, happy. I cannot describe the feeling I have,” according to the Olympics website. “Receiving the gold medal signifies our journey being acknowledged. It startled me that she had an engagement ring. My training has been concentrated on being an Olympic champion. It was not what I expected. I haven’t given our celebration any thought.
A few athletes will be taking one fewer ring with them when they depart Paris. During the 2024 Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony, Italian high jumper Gianmarco Tamberi lost his wedding ring in the Seine River. He apologized to his wife via Instagram.
“My love, I’m so sorry,” 32-year-old Tamberi captioned the photo.
