The Vatican Addresses the Controversy Surrounding the 2024 Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony: Pope Francis Expressed His Sadness
Not everyone who saw the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, including the Vatican, was a fan of the extravagant homage to French history that took place along the Seine River.
On Sunday, August 4, the Catholic Church’s headquarters released a statement denouncing certain moments from the event. Pope Francis was particularly “saddened” by a tableau of drag queens and other performers that seemed to be a parody of the “Last Supper” by Leonardo Da Vinci, according to commentators.
The final dinner that Jesus Christ shared with his followers prior to his arrest and crucifixion is shown in that painting. Despite the Olympic organizers’ denials of any deliberate allusion to the well-known artwork, it provoked a good deal of criticism from prominent conservative Christian figures.
The Vatican expressed disappointment over some of the scenes at the Paris Olympic Games opening ceremony and echoed recent criticisms about the offense caused to many Christians and followers of other religions, according to a rare weekend statement from the press office.
