The Simpsons Kills Off Longtime Character, Producer Tim Long’s Apology to Fans!

Multiple characters have been eliminated from The Simpsons over the years, and the most recent episode featured the demise of yet another. It occurs thirty-four years after the animated series’ initial airing, in which the character debuted in the third episode of the series in 1990.

The premiere date for the episode, “Cremains of the Day,” was April 21 on Fox. Larry Dalrymple met his demise atop his barstool in Moe’s Tavern during the episode. Although the character was a minor wholly relegated to the background, spending most of his time somberly imbibing at Moe’s, his extensive run on the series may have caused some devoted fans to be taken aback by his untimely demise. Homer, Lenny, Carl, and Moe spend the episode attempting to disperse Larry’s ashes in a manner that would have been in his honor.

Social media platforms made references to Larry’s demise prior to the episode’s broadcast. Just days before the premiere, The Simpsons author Matt Selman published a poll on X predicting that “Someone will perish in this Sunday’s all-new episode of [The Simpsons]! “Who will take their final breath?” Homer, Bart, Marge, and Larry the Silent Barfly were the available choices. In light of the improbable nature of the death of a Simpson family member, Larry won the poll by an overwhelming margin.

‘Simpsons’ Producer Tim Long Sorry to Fans

“The Simpsons” killed off a veteran character this week, causing shock and indignation among fans… and one producer says he expects nothing less from the show’s devoted viewers. According to Tim Long, co-executive producer of the long-running animated sitcom, the creative team intended Larry “The Barfly” Dalrymple’s death to have a strong impact on the viewers, despite the fact that Dalrymple never had a major role on the program.

As a refresher… Larry was a background character on the show, first debuting in 1989 during season 1 and spending most of his time at Moe’s Tavern with Homer Simpson and his friends. He occasionally drops a line or two.

Long believes it doesn’t matter how minor Larry’s involvement was because characters on “The Simpsons” don’t die often, so it’s a big deal when they do. Tim also apologizes to any fans who are upset by the death and the sad episode in general… but he says he appreciates that fans took it as hard as Homer and the gang did during the episode — it shows how cherished the program is still.

Furthermore, Long jokes that ‘Flintstones’ fans would not have been alarmed if the program killed off the loathed character, The Great Gazoo… so it’s wonderful to know fans care about all of the characters who make Springfield what it is.

That being said, Long is asking folks to stop freaking out because they didn’t kill off a key character like Barney or Moe!! While viewers may take some time to recover from this cartoon’s passing, at least one of the ‘Simpsons’ creators couldn’t be happier.

Numerous Characters Have Died on The Simpsons

The Simpsons has previously eliminated a series character. Ned’s initial spouse, Maude Flanders, was notably eliminated in an episode from 2000; however, remnants of her existence endure in the form of flashbacks and visions.

Additionally, Bart’s instructor Edna Krabappel, Lisa’s mentor Bleeding Gums Murphy, Homer’s colleague Frank Grimes, and Krusty’s father Rabbi Hyman Krustofsky have all been eliminated from the show. A number of additional characters have perished in non-canon episodes, including the yearly “Treehouse of Horror” Halloween specials.

At present, The Simpsons, which debuted on Fox in 1989, is celebrating its 35th season. This is the first of a previously granted two-season renewal for the series, ensuring its return following the May finale of the current season.
