Disney has formally postponed the Moana live-action film’s theatrical release date. Dwayne Johnson has stated that the film will start production later this year. The remake was supposed to hit theaters on June 27, 2025, but it was postponed for a full year and will instead debut on July 10, 2026.
Tony Award winner Thomas Kail will helm the live-action Moana film, in which Johnson will play Maui. Produced under the Seven Bucks Productions banner by Dwayne Johnson, Dany, and Hiram Garcia, Beau Flynn for Flynn Picture Co. Auli’i Cravalho and Scott Sheldon of Flynn Picture Co. are its executive producers. Producer of the original Moana, Jared Bush, will collaborate with Samoan industry veteran Dana Ledoux Miller on the remake.
Moana will Also Receive an Animated Sequel
Just in time for this year’s Thanksgiving holiday, Disney is set to release the much-awaited animation follow-up to 2016’s Moana on November 27 and the live-action film. David G. Derrick Jr. is both the director and writer of the sequel, which will once again include Johnson and Auliʻi Cravalho in their respective roles as Moana and Maui.

John Musker and Ron Clements directed the original. In addition to earning nearly $600 million in revenue, the film was well-received by critics and was nominated for two Oscars, including Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song.
Who’s Involved in the Live-Action Moana Movie?
Although additional information regarding the cast remains undisclosed, Auli’i Cravalho, who provided the original vocal for Moana, recently affirmed that she will not be reprising her renowned role in the live-action adaptation. She is delighted to “pass this baton to the next young woman of Pacific Island descent in honor of the incredible Pacific peoples’ cultures and communities that inspired her story” and will instead serve as executive producer.
The live-action remake of Moana will be produced by Beau Flynn of Flynn Picture Co., Dany, and Hiram Garcia under their Seven Bucks Productions banner, and Dwayne Johnson, who intends to return for the remake.

Scott Sheldon of Flynn Picture Co. and Auli’i Cravalho, who provided the voice of Moana in the 2016 film, will serve as executive producers. Jared Bush, who penned the screenplay for Moana, will collaborate with Samoan industry veteran Dana Ledoux Miller in the production of the adaptation.
The original was under the direction of John Musker and Ron Clements. In addition to its commercial triumph, which surpassed $600 million in revenue, the film also garnered favorable critical reception and was nominated for two Academy Awards, including Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song.
