A 13-year-old’s performance on Star Search led to an audition with the co-founder of LaFace Records, set up by a record company rep. Usher was signed right away after trying out for Boyz II Men’s “End of the Road.”
His mother quit her job to take care of Usher’s business. As he went through puberty and worked on his first song, he had a hard time changing the way he sang. The company put Usher’s record on hold and sent him to New York in 1994 for a “camp” with Puff Daddy to sing and earn money. Usher’s self-titled debut record came out on August 30, 1994. He was sixteen years old. It got to number 25 on Billboard.
