Before you get lost in Baldur’s Gate 3, you’ll need to choose between Vulkan and DirectX 11. Due to its popularity and high sales, Baldur’s Gate 3 has been breaking records on Steam. A big question needs to be answered in addition to going on great quests: Which graphics API should you use?
Should you use Vulkan, a newer API that promises smooth images, or DirectX 11, which has been around for a long time? In Baldur’s Gate 3, Vulkan isn’t completely stable, so you’ll need to think about your choices.
On the other side of the ring is DirectX 11, which has been around for a long time. It may not be the newest game, but it has been tried, tested, and proven to work. Even though Vulkan is a new technology, DirectX 11 still stands tall, even when things get hard.
Your choice will come down to the specs and parts of your game rig. Not every piece of tech works well with Vulkan.
Vulkan or DX11 for Baldur’s Gate 3 on AMD GPUs
We suggest switching to Vulkan if your PC, laptop, or handheld has an AMD GPU or APU.
Larian has said before that Baldur’s Gate 3’s graphical API is a little less stable, but most of these problems seem to have been fixed now that the game is in Early Access.
Vulkan or DX11 for Steam Deck on Baldur’s Gate 3
DirectX 11 is the way to go if you want to play on Steam Deck. Even though it has an AMD APU, Proton, the Linux translation layer, seems to be having trouble right now with Vulkan and Baldur’s Gate 3.
It will probably be fixed in a future Proton update, but for now, you should use DirectX 11 and turn all those levels down to low. You will also have to change your version of Proton to Experimental.
Vulkan or DX11 for Baldur’s Gate 3 on Intel GPUs
You should use Vulkan if you have one of the new Intel Arc GPUs. Even though the cards do support DirectX 11, using Vulkan will give you a much better and more stable game.
Vulkan or DX11 on Nvidia GPUs to Run Baldur’s Gate 3
DirectX 11 will be great for people who have GPUs from Nvidia, but you should still turn on DLSS to get the most out of your game experience. If you have an RTX 30-series or 20-series GPU, you won’t be able to use DLSS 3, but you can still use DLSS 2 to make your game run much faster.
Supersampling Will Help You Do Better
Even though GTX GPUs won’t be able to use DLSS at all, we still suggest using FSR supersampling to smooth out any hiccups that might happen during the game’s more chaotic parts.
This is also true for people with AMD, Intel, or GTX cards. You’ll make sure you have a good speed, which is important for really getting into the world.
But it’s important to note that Nvidia’s much more powerful cards will probably be able to force their way through anything. If you have a 4090 in your system, you can choose either one. The raw power will get you through.
It is made with AMD design and works like DirectX 12, which isn’t in the game. Both of these APIs use a lot less software to talk to the hardware, which generally means they work better. But each game engine is very different, and Divinity 4.0, which runs Baldur’s Gate 3, is no different.
