Billy Thomson Career
Thomson’s first professional club was Partick Thistle. The kid was highly rated, so he got to play in some League Cup and Glasgow Cup games with the big boys. And he earned his first two caps for Scotland’s U-21 team.
In August of 1978, he received a bid of £50,000, which was extraordinary for a 20-year-old backup player on a team that was not particularly well-known at the time. Thistle decided to take the offer. There, he served as Alan Rough’s backup and played for the league only once.
In August of 1978, 20-year-old Jim Clunie was signed by St. Mirren for £50,000 by Jim Clunie. For the Paisley club, he was a key contributor for six years, during which time he made 317 starts. The first game action came in the League Cup, and it was against Dumbarton.
While playing with the Saints, he broke into the Scotland squad and eventually earned seven full caps. Thomson was a strong performer for his club, and his saves from Johnny Rep and Laurent Roussey of AS Saint-Étienne in the UEFA Cup remain legendary.
St. Mirren handed him a punishment during the 1983–84 season after he made some negative comments about the club’s working conditions and pay. Manager Alex Miller declared Thomson will never suit up for the Saints again. In June of 1984, Thomson was sold for £75,000.

In 1984, Thomson joined Dundee United under Jim McLean and served as Hamish McAlpine’s backup. As the 1984–85 season began, Thomson was the team’s top pick. By the end of September, though, McAlpine had reclaimed his place on the squad. Because of McAlpine’s injury in October 1985, Thomson became the starting goalkeeper. He held that position until the early 1990s.
United reached the UEFA Cup Final in 1986–1987. Along the way, they swept an F.C. Barcelona team coached by Terry Venables and featuring Gary Lineker and Mark Hughes in the quarterfinals, and in the semi-finals, they eliminated Borussia Mönchengladbach by defeating them at home for the first time in 55 European games dating back to 1970.
After barely five minutes of the first leg of the final versus Göteborg, Thomson was hurt diving at the feet of Lennart Nilsson and required five stitches for a blow slightly behind his left ear.
