Early Life of Sly Stone
Sly Stone was born on March 15, 1943, before the family moved to Vallejo, California, in the North Bay of the San Francisco Bay Area. Sly was the second of the family’s five children.
During his time in elementary school, Sylvester was often called “Sly.” Early on, a classmate misspelt his name as “Slyvester,” and he’s been called that ever since.
K.C. and Alpha Stewart raised him. As kids, Sylvester, his brother Freddie, and their two sisters, Rose and Loretta, were known as “The Stewart Four.”
Loretta, the oldest sister, was the only Stewart child who did not go into music. All of the other Stewart children, including the youngest, Vaetta (“Vet”), took the last name “Stone” and became interested in music.
After high school, Stone went to Solano Community College in Vallejo to study music.
Career Highlights of Sly Stone
In the middle of the 1960s, Stone worked as a disc jockey for the soul radio station KSOL in San Francisco, California. On his playlists, he played music by white artists like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.
During the same time, he worked as a staff record producer for Autumn Records. He worked with bands like The Beau Brummels, The Mojo Men, Bobby Freeman, and Grace Slick’s first band, The Great Society, which were mostly white and from the San Francisco area.
In 1966, Sly was on stage with his band Sly and the Stoners. Cynthia Robinson played trumpet in the band. His brother Freddie was working with Greg Errico and Jerry Martini in a band called Freddie and the Stone Souls.
One night, the two of them were standing in a kitchen when they decided to combine their bands and add Larry Graham.
Sly and The Family Stone
Sly and the Family Stone were one of the first groups to play funk music in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Their mix of R&B rhythms, catchy melodies, and psychedelic sounds made a new mix of pop, soul, and rock.
After releasing A Whole New Thing in 1967, which didn’t do very well, Sly & The Family Stone had their first hit single with “Dance to the Music,” which was later put on an album with the same name (1968).
By the summer of 1969, Sly & The Family Stone were one of the biggest names in music. Before the end of the year, they released two more top-five singles, “Hot Fun in the Summertime” and “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Again)”/”Everybody Is a Star,” and they played at Woodstock. When Bob Marley and his band, The Wailers, came to the U.S. for the first time in 1973, they opened for Sly and The Family Stone.
Stone went on to record four more albums as a solo artist. Only High on You (1975) was released under just his name; the other three were released under the name “Sly & The Family Stone.”
Stone also worked with Funkadelic on their 1981 album The Electric Spanking of War Babies, but this didn’t help his career.
In the early 1980s, Sly Stone and Muruga Booker worked together on a George Clinton/Funkadelic family project called “The Soda Jerks.” They recorded an album’s worth of music, but only one song has been released. Muruga still wants to release the project’s materials, though.
