Devoted followers of alternative music are in for a treat, as Taylor Swift has enlisted the services of Florence Welch for a track on her upcoming album, The Tortured Poets Department. Although Florence has been a staple in the alt-rock genre for many years, Swifties may not be overly informed about the English-American vocalist and songwriter.
Who is Florence Welch?
Florence Welch is a well-known British-American artist who is most renowned for being Florence and the Machine’s main singer and principal songwriter. The group made its debut in 2009 with their studio album Lungs, which shot to the top of the charts very fast.
With her distinctively beautiful vocals dominating her track choices and eventually her live venues, Florence has only become better with each new album. Florence has dabbled in writing in addition to her career as a singer. Her book Useless Magic, which features a mix of poetry and songs with pictures, was published in 2018.
Over her career, Florence has received a lot of attention for her complex lyrics; Billboard went track-by-track through the songs on her album Ceremonial. “I’d do anything to make you stay / Tell me what you want me to say,” she begs over the album’s most throbbing tribal drumming in the song “No Light, No Light,” as the venerable music publication described in 2011.
“Lyrically, Welch is on her knees; musically, the song radiates absolute strength.” Swifties are therefore not surprised by Taylor’s desire to collaborate with an artist of her calibre.
How Did Florence Welch and Taylor Swift Meet?
Taylor was an enduring admirer of Florence’s work before their collaboration as The Tortured Poets Department. It seems that the two vocalists first encountered each other in 2012, given that Florence is an intimate companion of Blake Lively, an acquaintance of Taylor’s. They began to effusively praise one another in public in 2015.

“What distinguishes Florence?” In May 2015, Taylor stated to Billboard, “Everything.” “Every time I’ve been in her presence, she has been the most captivating individual in the room, attracting those who are captivated by the mere thought of being in her vicinity.
However, upon encountering individuals, she greets them with a cordial compliment and disarms them instantly. “Only a handful of individuals in my lifetime are truly electric, and Florence is certainly one of them.”

Taylor further stated, “She is the most enjoyable individual to dance with at a party; however, after only five minutes, you may find yourself engaged in a profound dialogue regarding love and heartbreak while seated on the stairs with her.”
Florence, meanwhile, attributed the confidence boost she received from Taylor to the publication of her third studio album, How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful. “Taylor advised that you should write about personal experiences,” the singer-songwriter explained to Billboard.
In 2023, Taylor and Florence attended a concert together in London, demonstrating that their friendship was still thriving. Fans were naturally ecstatic to discover the most significant crossover the friends had yet to accomplish: “Florida!!!” appeared on the track list of The Tortured Poets Department, featuring Florence.
