Yeon Sang-ho’s 2016 action horror thriller Train to Busan has Gong Yoo, Jung Yu-mi, Ma Dong-seok, Kim Su-an, Choi Woo-shik, Ahn So-hee, and Kim Eui-sung in leading roles. The majority of the movie is set aboard a KTX traveling from Seoul to Busan when a zombie apocalypse unexpectedly breaks out across the nation, endangering the lives of the riders.
On May 13, 2016, the movie made its debut in the Midnight Screenings section of the Cannes Film Festival. As the first Korean film of 2016, the movie broke the attendance record of over 10 million theatergoers on August 7.
With the release of the animated precursor Seoul Station in 2016 and the standalone sequel Peninsula in 2020, the film effectively established the Train to Busan film series. There are plans for an American-produced version and another installment.
What Happens to Seok-Woo (Gong Yoo) at the End?
By the conclusion of the film Train to Busan, one of the undead has infected Seok-Woo. Before transforming into a monstrous creature, he seals the cockpit and entrusts Sung-Gyeong with his daughter. As Seok-Woo recalls the various emotions he experienced upon becoming a father and embarking on his voyage with his daughter, he leaps from the train with a grin on his face.

So-An and Sung-Gyeong surpass the obstructions as the train nears the final tunnel leading to Busan. One can observe the military personnel positioned in anticipation on the opposing side. As So-An recites Aloha’ Oe, the military personnel realize that they are the sole survivors; consequently, the film concludes on a positively sentimental yet bittersweet note.
Train to Busan is not even remotely a bloodsucking undead horror-action film. The film presents an aesthetically pleasing and sentimental odyssey that sustains our attention until its conclusion. Gong Yoo was highly regarded for his performance as Seok-Woo.

His character endures a significant transformation arc in the film. Seok-Woo transforms from a self-absorbed individual into a devoted paternal figure and a compassionate individual. With $80.5 million in South Korea’s earnings, $2.2 million in the US and Canada, and $15.8 million in other regions, Train to Busan brought in $98.5 million globally. It rose to the top of the Korean box office in Singapore, Hong Kong, and Malaysia. It was the highest-grossing movie of the year in South Korea, with over 11 million attendees.
