Sherrone Moore and Brian Kelly Among Top Picks if Harbaugh Heads to NFL
In the event that Michigan needs to replace Jim Harbaugh, it plans to search widely for a replacement. Possibly, though, that net won’t have to go much farther than Schembechler Hall’s end.
Offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore is undoubtedly at the top of the list of possible replacements in the event Jim Harbaugh leaves for the NFL, which seems likely given his repeated interviews.
Before Moore took over as acting coach for four games this past season, including victories against Ohio State and Penn State, he was already a rising star in his sixth season at Michigan.
Given an opportunity to demonstrate his leadership qualities, on game day at the very least, Moore had a significant impact on Michigan’s run for the national championship. He is familiar with Ann Arbour’s culture, roster, and, quite honestly, future.
Following the Penn State victory, Moore gave an emotional postgame interview on Fox that allowed the world to get to know him better.
“I don’t really care about what other people say about it,” Moore stated in December. “I made sure I talked to my mom about it, and that’s what really mattered.”
On that important day, Moore made a significant impact by calling for 32 consecutive runs for the Wolverines, wearing down the Nittany Lions defense. He also played a crucial role in a fourth-quarter comeback against Alabama, saving Michigan’s season and leading them to the College Football Playoff National Championship.
Despite a decrease in overall offensive production this season, Moore’s back-to-back Joe Moore Awards for the best offensive line in 2021 and 2022 speak volumes. In 2023, Moore’s unit displayed remarkable efficiency, committing only eight turnovers in 924 offensive snaps, ranking among the top two teams.
Given these accomplishments, Moore appears to be the top choice to replace Harbaugh, especially since other potential candidates have secured new coaching positions. Sherrone Moore, Michigan’s offensive coordinator, has had a successful year, with a 4-0 record as an acting coach, contributing to a strong running game and quarterback development. Despite lacking experience leading a large program, he has proven himself deserving of the opportunity.
Brian Kelly, LSU coach, is a notable candidate, having moved from Notre Dame to LSU. Michigan’s resources could attract Kelly, who brings experience in BCS Championship Games and College Football Playoffs. Lance Leipold, Kansas coach, is also a strong contender, having garnered attention for major coaching positions in recent seasons.
Jesse Minter, Michigan’s defensive coordinator, has followed a successful path from the Baltimore Ravens to lead the defense for Michigan, contributing to one of the best defensive performances in school history.
Matt Campbell, Iowa State coach, remains a viable option despite recent challenges with a less impressive record. His past successes with Iowa State and Toledo make him a desirable candidate, drawing comparisons to a younger Harbaugh.
