Rubin inadvertently inquired about the degree of success achieved by the Super Bowl trailer featuring former co-star and African American actor Samuel L. Jackson, Laurence Fishburne, who had reprised his role as Morpheus from The Matrix franchise for a car commercial, during a live on-air interview with Jackson on February 10, 2014. Rubin was ‘roast’ by Jackson in retaliation for these erroneous references, which offended him.

Rubin stated in his contrition that he felt “stupid” for not bringing up this point during the interview, but rather in reference to a Captain America: The Winter Soldier commercial that was also aired at the Super Bowl and featured Jackson. Rubin, while acknowledging that Jackson had misconstrued him, nonetheless expressed self-reproach for what he termed “a very amateurish error.”

Rubin was raised in Los Angeles after being born in San Diego. In 1982, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in American Studies and Rhetoric from Occidental College. Rubin was a LA resident. He had four children from two marriages.
At home, on May 10, 2024, Rubin suffered a heart attack and passed away. The day before his passing, he had made his last television appearance.
