Frames per second (FPS) is important in any first-person shooter, and Apex Legends is no different. On PC, your experience will be much better if you have a high FPS and don’t hit the 144 cap. Here’s everything you need to know about getting more FPS in Apex Legends.
If you play Apex Legends on PC, you may find that your FPS is limited to 144, even though most PCs are capable of more. Even with low settings, many current mid-range to high-end GPUs can run the game at much more than 144 FPS.
If you’re playing on a console, you can only get 60 FPS, so you don’t have to think about this at all. However, this might be a good reason to switch to a PC.
The PC FPS problem can be fixed on both Steam and the EA App. Here’s everything you need to know about how to play Apex Legends on PC without hitting the 144 FPS limit.
Apex Legends: How to Avoid the FPS Cap
To make sure there is no FPS cap in Apex Legends, you need to add a command line to the game’s launch choices in Steam and EA App.
- If Apex Legends is open, close it.
- Open Steam or the EA app.
- Right-click on Apex Legends in your Game Library.
- On the EA APP, click the “Game Properties” button.
- If you’re using Steam, click “Properties.”
- Go to the General (Steam) or Advanced Launch Options (EA App) tab.
- Type: +fps_max unlimited under Command line options (EA App) or Launch Options (Steam).
High-FPS Apex graphics settings
You can still be competitive even if you don’t have a great graphics card. Apex is a great-looking game, but on some older PCs, it can be as slow as a PowerPoint show.
The answer is easy: put as many image settings as you can on the lowest setting. This will give you a higher FPS, and it’s a good idea if you have an older or lower-end GPU. There is a trade-off in quality, of course.
Your weapon and legend skins won’t look nearly as good, but you’ll be able to effectively target enemies and help the team instead of floundering while your PC tries to keep up.
Some choices will affect your FPS more than others, so if you can, try to find a happy medium.
Make sure Discord is working well
A lot of PC Apex Legends players talk to their friends in-game using Discord. Even though the software is great, there is a way to make sure it’s fully tuned to get a few more FPS.
- Start up Discord
- Find the Settings menu (it looks like a circle in the bottom left corner).
- Click the Overlay tab and uncheck “Enable in-game overlay.”
Even though the Discord interface may not seem like much, it can often slow down FPS in games on PCs with low or medium specs. Hardware Acceleration can also be turned off. This is done at the bottom of the “Appearance” tab. This stops Discord from using your graphics card to speed up the program, which will give you a few more frames per second in-game.
Here’s how to turn on your Apex Legends FPS counter while you’re playing:
- Start by going to Settings.
- Click “In-Game,” then look for the FPS number in-game.
- Toggle it from ‘Off’ to ‘On‘
- Choose which corner you want to display FPS in.
Upgrade your PC
Some players’ game rigs are the main reason why their FPS in Apex Legends isn’t as good as it could be. Unlike a gaming device, which already has everything you need to play your favorite games, your PC needs to have the right parts and keep up with new technology.
These are the PC specs that Respawn Entertainment says you’ll need to play Apex Legends well. If you don’t quite meet these standards, you might have frame drops and other problems with how the game runs.
