What is the storyline of ‘It Ends With Us’?
Lily Bloom moves to Boston after college to begin a floral store. She just gave a eulogy at her father’s funeral in Plethora, Maine. Her mother hid her father’s abuse, making Lily despise them both.
Lily rereads her childhood journals and remembers her first love Atlas Corrigan, who joined the military but vowed to return. Meet neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid while battling her affections for Atlas. Both are drawn to each other, but Lily wants a relationship while Ryle wants casual sex. They meet again and start a relationship after Lily launches her business.
Ryle furiously pushes Lily when she laughs when he drops a casserole one night, then quickly apologizes. Lily is outraged by her father’s treatment of her mother, but she determines they are different from her parents and accepts his apologies, but tells him that she will leave if he harms her again.
Lily reconnects with Atlas at a restaurant where he works, making Ryle jealous despite her claim that Atlas is simply a friend. After seeing Lily’s injuries, Atlas surreptitiously offers her his phone number, suspecting Ryle is assaulting her.
Lily and Ryle marry impulsively in Vegas and have a steady marriage until he finds Atlas’ number and pushes her down the stairs. He then admits to accidentally shooting and killing his brother Emerson as a toddler, causing anguish and wrath. After Lily forgives him, he reads her childhood journals and tries to rape her, knocking her out when she tries to protect herself, believing she is having an affair with Atlas.
Waking up, Lily exits the house and phones Atlas. He takes her to the hospital, where she learns she’s pregnant with Ryle’s child and keeps it a secret. While Ryle goes abroad for a fellowship, she stays with Atlas for a few days and then returns home. Atlas reveals he still loves Lily but suppresses them because of Ryle. After comprehending her mother’s maltreatment, Lily tells her.
Lily makes peace with Ryle and lets him support her during her final months of pregnancy, but she stays emotionally aloof. Lily later had a daughter named after Ryle’s brother. After giving birth, Lily informs Ryle she wants a divorce because she doesn’t want her kid to see his harsh behavior.
