Donald T. Sterling, an American attorney and financier, was the proprietor of the San Diego / Los Angeles Clippers professional basketball franchise of the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1981 to 2014.
The NBA fined Sterling $2.5 million and banned him from the league for life in April 2014 after private recordings of him uttering racist comments were made public. In May, Sterling’s wife Shelly struck an agreement for the Sterling Family Trust to sell the Clippers to Steve Ballmer for $2 billion.
Sterling contested the sale in court. In August 2014, the NBA Board of Governors authorized the sale of the Clippers to Ballmer. Sterling’s litigation against the NBA was resolved in November 2016, and he continues to be involved in the real estate industry in Los Angeles.

He had just dined at Lucky’s, a prominent restaurant in the neighborhood, and was being escorted to his car by an unknown woman. Shirley, with whom he has been married for over 60 years, had driven separately. Perhaps there wasn’t enough space in Sterling’s car for Shirley, the mystery woman, and his doggy bag.
Donald Sterling’s Scandal is Getting the Fictionalized Series Treatment
FX’s Clipped will be available on Hulu on a weekly basis beginning June 3, 2024, and is based on the ESPN 30 for 30 podcast The Sterling Affairs. The initial two episodes have already been released, with Ed O’Neill, a member of the Modern Family cast, assuming Sterling’s scandal-ridden role.
The program concentrates on the conclusion of Sterling’s tenure as the Clippers’ proprietor and delves into his relationship with V. Stiviano, the individual who captured his racist remarks. Money, power, hubris, and, of course, trust in a world that has not earned it are the primary concerns.
During an interview with UPI, Ed stated that Sterling did not believe he was being racist and understood that racism was inherently immoral. In reality, the former proprietor considered himself a hero by serving as a benefactor to Black individuals. “It really made no sense, but to him it did,” according to Ed.
In terms of portraying Sterling, his erratic mood fluctuations were enjoyable. “It’s almost like portraying a Mafia boss without the violence, but it’s psychic violence.” “He was a manipulator of people,” he stated.

Cleopatra Coleman, a British actor, portrays Stiviano, a character who ultimately contributed to Sterling’s downfall. Coleman’s goal was to provide a more comprehensive portrayal of the character. Cleopatra disclosed to UPI that the power dynamic between Stiviano and Sterling was one of the old guard versus the new guard.
Sterling was an old-school individual, while Stiviano was well-versed in the modern world and technology. He was unaware of the internet’s extensive capabilities; however, Viviano was exceedingly astute in this regard.
Ed and Cleopatra both concluded that there was “genuine affection” between these two distinct individuals, despite the outcome. Sterling did not perceive it as erotic, but rather as a form of companionship. “There were moments where it really felt like there was manipulation taking place,” reported Cleopatra, “but there were some moments where it felt genuine.”
