Donnie Yen Will Reprise Caine in a New ‘John Wick’ Spin-off Series!

Lionsgate has confirmed that it is producing a spinoff centered on Donnie Yen‘s character Caine, the blind assassin introduced in 2023’s John Wick: Chapter 4. There is no director attached yet, but the movie will be overseen by franchise producers Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, and original Wick director Chad Stahelski.

“Working on John Wick: Chapter 4 was an incredible experience. These films resonate so strongly because, like me, Chad, Basil, and Erica strive to create action, fights, and stunts that are not just thrilling, imaginative, and artistic, but also evocative of character, plot, and emotion. “Caine is an incredible character with a haunted past, and I am thrilled to return to the role,” Yen said in a statement.

Caine appears in Chapter 4 as an old associate of Keanu Reeves’ John Wick, recruited to execute his friend after the High Table threatens his daughter. At the end of the film, he teams up with Wick to battle countless other assassins, and he is eventually released from his obligation to the high table. Caine finally reunites with his daughter in the post-credits sequence, but Rina Sawayama’s Shimazu Akira is also present, wanting vengeance for her father’s murder earlier in the film.

Yen’s Notable Works

Internationally renowned is Yen for helming the Ip Man film franchise, which chronicles the life and teachings of the legendary martial artist who mentored Bruce Lee. Chirrut Îmwe, another blind character portrayed by Yen, appeared in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016). In XXX: The Return of Xander Cage (2017), Yen played the primary antagonist opposite Vin Diesel.

More About the Spinoff

The third live-action offshoot in the John Wick franchise will be represented in this film. The inaugural installment of the Wick universe, The Continental, a three-part prequel series produced by Peacock last year, featured Colin Woodell in the role of Winston Scott, the proprietor of the eponymous assassin hotel portrayed by Ian McShane in the films.

Ballerina, the first Wick derivative film, will be released in theaters the following year. The film will be situated between John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and John Wick: Chapter 4. Ana de Armas will portray the vengeful dancer-turned-killer Rooney, and McShane, the late Lance Reddick, and Keanu Reeves himself will also make appearances.

A year ago, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Reeves lauded Yen. “He’s obviously a legend in action movies and he’s such a fantastic actor and artist,” according to him. “I admired the manner in which he developed the character of Caine and linked it to his action sequences.” “A view that Chad and I both hold is that the action was essentially an expression of the character first, which was character.”
