Annette Bening Transgender Son: An actress named Annette Bening says her “brilliant” transgender son has taught her a lot.
Bening talked about her trans son Stephen Ira in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. It was the first time she had ever done so. She also talked about how she backs LGBTQ+ rights and the rights of striking artists and writers.
Stephen, who is now 31 years old, told everyone he was trans when he was a teenager. Bening said, “My son is incredibly smart.” “I mean, I love all four of my wonderful children very much.” Stephen has always been very interested in books. He just put out a new song, which I just read and thought was amazing. He was in The Paris Review, and I’m so proud of him!”
Her words went on, “I am so proud of him. He has made his way.” “I respect him, and I learned a lot from him when he first came out.” … Because I didn’t know everything, I didn’t always know what to do or make the right choices, but we got through it.
She also said, “This is the most I’ve ever talked about it because I’m private and my son is private.” “He can talk about his own life.”
Bening has spoken out strongly for LGBTQ+ rights many times. In the last few years, she has given more help. She told the Reporter, “The real change has happened as the right wing in the country has become more and more mobilized to lie about the LGBTQ community.”
“They’ve been making fun of our community and making problems that don’t exist. They’ve also been spreading hate and fear to get people to support them.” In elections past, especially against gay people, that has happened. It’s not a new thing. Transphobia, on the other hand, is very common right now.
She said, “I wish everyone had a transgender family member because once you love someone who is trans, you get it.” Her favorite doctor is a trans woman, and Stephen is “an inspiration to me.”
She is also moved by the work of gay star Ian McKellen. She said, “Sir Ian McKellen has done amazing things for gay rights since he came out.”
Bening fights for many causes, such as the right to have an abortion and the rights of workers. She recently became chair of the board for the Entertainment Community Fund, which used to be called the Actors Fund, and helps performing artists who are having trouble paying their bills.
Since actors’ and writers’ groups have been on strike for a few months, the number of people asking for its help has gone up a lot. “It has given more than $4 million to 2,000 film and TV workers since May through its work stoppage fund,” the Reporter says.
Bening said, “What we do is so important and unique, and we do it with such honesty and humility.”
She couldn’t talk about her next big movie project, Nyad, because of the strikes. In it, she plays lesbian swimming star Diana Nyad. If a union member is on strike, they can’t promote their movies or TV shows.
