The next entry in the well-known horror genre features a return of the insane shape-shifting clown Pennywise, who has been vanquished (for the time being) in the two-part It film series.
In Welcome to Derry, a prequel series on the occurrences of the Maine town where horrors await anyone who encounter the clown, HBO will venture back to Pennywise’s small-town playground. The show is supposed to trace the demon’s beginnings and pair him with a fresh batch of youths who fall victim to his terrifying methods.
Since the huge success of It (2017) and It: Chapter 2 (2019), which exposed one of Stephen King’s scariest creations to an entirely new generation, the episodic continuation has been in the works.
What, though, is in store for Pennywise’s former children? Everything we know about HBO’s Welcome to Derry, available on Max, is provided here.
What is the release date of ‘Welcome to Derry’?
Due to the previously mentioned strikes by the Screen Actors Guild of America and Writers Guild of America, HBO declared that several of its flagship series would be postponed until 2025, including Welcome to Derry. The original plan was for it to be out around Halloween in 2024.
HBO recently revealed that several of its most popular shows, which are scheduled to premiere on Max in 2025 and beyond, will be referred to as HBO Originals when they do so, even though they will stream on Max.
What is the plot of ‘Welcome to Derry’?
With the exception of hinting that Welcome to Derry will be a prequel series that takes place before the events of filmmaker Andy Muschietti’s two-part film series, HBO has been rather quiet about the project.
Fans may likely anticipate, however, that Pennywise and any other terrifying creatures he possesses will be interfering with the slow-motion small-town existence.
One thing we do know for sure is that King’s demon mythos will be thoroughly explored by Muschietti, his sister Barbara Muschietti, and co-developer Jason Fuchs.
When the series was revealed in 2023, the siblings released a statement saying, “As teenagers, we took turns reading chapters of Stephen King’s It until the thick paperback fell to pieces.”
“The richness of this epic tale extends much beyond what our It films could cover. We are eager to impart the depths of Steve’s book, with all of its love, terror, humor, and compassion.”
What is the cast of ‘Welcome to Derry’?
Bill Skarsgård’s confirmation of his comeback as Pennywise in May 2024 was arguably the most significant casting announcement. Skarsgård’s spine-tingling performance was a big factor in the success of the film series, so his return—as an executive producer as well—is a strong testament to how closely connected the films will be to the franchise.
Though it’s unclear how significant a part he will play in the series, Derry appears to be under constant Pennywise threat.
The series will also introduce new franchise members, including Taylour Paige (Zola), Jovan Adepo (The Leftovers), Chris Chalk (Perry Mason), James Remar (Black Lightning), Stephen Rider (Daredevil), Rudy Mancuso (Música), and recurring guest star Madeleine Stowe (Revenge).
Is there any trailer available for ‘Welcome to Derry’?
Although there isn’t currently an official trailer for Welcome to Derry, a sizzle reel showcasing new HBO and Max shows featured the first few seconds of the film. Although the first glimpse of the series does not disclose much, it does feature the iconic red balloon, which raises the possibility that Pennywise may be hiding somewhere.
