Robert Eggers’ New Movie ‘Nosferatu’ Gets a Release Date

Fans of the recognizable fangs can expect another storm in the near future with the theatrical release of the vampire horror-comedy Abigail. Director Robert Eggers has been toying with and tormenting him with this project since 2015.

With only The Vitch under his belt at the time, he felt that he had not yet made a name for himself as a director. He went on to make The Lighthouse and, most recently, The Northman since then, and he is now prepared to proceed with the enormous movie Nosferatu.

It seems sense that he was chosen first to write and direct this picture given how much mythology and folklore he incorporates into all of his films.

One of the earliest vampire images in film history was found in the 1922 Nosferatu film, which was based on the “unauthorized and unofficial” version of Bram Stoker’s well-known novel, Dracula. In 1979, Werner Herzog wrote and directed a remake of it called Nosferatu the Vampyre.

Now, to the disgust of any living Bram Stoker kin, Eggers is bringing the classic horror film into the twenty-first century. Everything you need to know about the upcoming movie will be covered in this helpful guide!

Is there a release date for ‘Nosferatu’?

Nosferatu has a release date set as fans eagerly await the next masterpiece of horror from Robert Eggers. The eerie vampire, which offers the ideal counter-programming to other holiday films, was first teased in late 2023 and is scheduled to hit theaters on Christmas 2024 as per Screen Rent.

Peter Kujawski, chairman of Focus Features, teasedly stated, “We can assure you that Robert Eggers’ daring filmmaking is always a gift for fans, and his Nosferatu is planning quite the Christmas feast,” in reference to the release date.

‘Nosferatu’: What is it about?

The plot of Nosferatu centers on a young man, Thomas Hutter, who is sent by his employer to assist Count Orlok with the purchase of a house. Hutter quickly suspects that Orlok is a vampire after noticing strange reactions from the townspeople and experiencing unsettling incidents.

Orlok becomes infatuated with a photograph of Hutter’s wife, Ellen, particularly drawn to her neck. Ellen, after reading about vampires, discovers that the only way to defeat Orlok is for a “pure-hearted” woman to willingly offer her blood to him.

The story unfolds as a gothic tale of obsession, love, and fear, set in the 1800s. Despite attempts to destroy all copies of the film due to legal battles over its resemblance to Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Nosferatu survived and is now considered a defining masterpiece of horror cinema.

The upcoming remake by Robert Eggers promises to explore similar dark themes with a focus on a haunted young woman and her terrifying entanglement with the vampire.

What is the cast of ‘Nosferatu’?

Nosferatu Cast

In the upcoming movie, Bill Skarsgård will play Count Orlok, a character blending horror and unsettling sexuality. Known for his role as Pennywise in “IT,” Skarsgård was initially considered for a different part but convinced director Robert Eggers to let him portray the notorious vampire. Skarsgård hinted that his portrayal would be unrecognizable and highly sexualized.

Joining him is Nicholas Hoult as Thomas Hutter, the film’s protagonist, previously portrayed by Harry Styles. Hoult is recognized for roles in “Warm Bodies,” “X-Men: First Class,” and “The Menu.” Lily-Rose Depp will play his wife, Ellen Hutter, a role initially considered for Anya Taylor-Joy.

Willem Dafoe, an Eggers regular, will play Professor Albin Eberhart Von Franz, a character not in the original “Nosferatu.” Ralph Ineson, another Eggers alumnus, will appear as Dr. Wilhelm Seivers. Additional cast members include Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Emma Corrin as Friedrich and Anna Harding, respectively, and Simon McBurney as Herr Knock, Hutter’s employer. This cast promises to bring a fresh take on the classic horror story.

Does ‘Nosferatu’ Have a Trailer?

Yes, the first official teaser trailer for Nosferatu was posted online by Focus Features on June 24, 2024, following its exclusive theatrical premiere ahead of Jeff Nichols’ crime film The Bikeriders. The teaser was first shown during Universal’s CinemaCon presentation in April 2024. Britta DeVore of Collider described the site’s trailer as follows:

Lily-Rose Depp is shown in the teaser praying and watching intently as she begs for something or someone to come to her. A voiceover has Depp’s Ellen Hutter questioning Willem Dafoe’s Professor Albin Eberhart Von Franz on whether evil originates on the outside or finds its way in.

From this point on, the action increased up speed, with gory images of hordes of rats and a guy chopping off the head of a pigeon, all while we saw Thomas Hutter, played by Nicholas Hoult, get his first glimpse of Count Orlok’s (Bill Skarsgård) castle.

At last, the imposing vampire with the title stood in the shadows, accompanied by a dog-like figure. Even though we didn’t see Skarsgård’s face, the sight was sufficiently unsettling to have the audience erupt in raucous cheers.

Conclusion

With Robert Eggers’ visionary direction and a stellar cast led by Bill Skarsgård and Lily-Rose Depp, Nosferatu promises to revitalize classic horror. The chilling teaser has already stirred excitement, setting the stage for a haunting cinematic experience when it debuts in theaters Christmas 2024.
