Simon Rex Lives in a Joshua Tree Shipping Container, Calling It a Transformative Experience

The actor Simon Rex is more of a minimalist than a Hollywood glitzster.

Rex, 50, talked about living in a “shipping container” outside of California’s Joshua Tree National Park when he appeared on the podcast “Family Trips with the Meyers Brothers,” which is hosted by siblings Josh and Seth Meyers.

The Red Rocket star, who also frequently travels in his RV, described it as essentially 450 square feet. “You discover that you don’t need much, and there’s a certain zen quality to that as well as to simplifying everything and avoiding clutter because, well, you don’t need all of this stuff,”

Rex acknowledged that his living situation had forced him outside of his “comfort zone,” but he also pointed out that his “tiny house,” which consists of two shipping containers and was architect-designed, was built. Only thirty minutes from Joshua Tree, his five-acre property is situated in a secluded area.

“You know, it’s off grid, so there isn’t any infrastructure. My water well is here. Rex remarked, “I have a septic tank and solar power. It seems as though you are on 50 acres or more, with no one in sight. As a city person, you couldn’t be more in tune with nature and outside of your comfort zone. It is a little box with only one side made of glass.

After living his entire life in big cities, the Scary Movie 3 actor was motivated to attempt this unusual way of life, and he described the experience as “life changing.”

During the podcast interview, Rex stated:

“I was looking at places in Joshua Tree for a while, and this guy did a really, really nice job.” “I was like, ‘Let me just do the whole opposite.’ I’ve spent my entire life living in an urban metropolis—New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco—like a human zoo. I am unable to even tell you. It’s practically life-altering. I simply go there to unwind; it’s almost like my escape pad.

Rex seems to be infatuated with Joshua Tree, as seen by his frequent Instagram postings detailing his travels to the desert, where he rides a motorcycle and takes in the breathtaking “no filter” sunsets. He disclosed in 2022 that he had constructed a cutting-edge “tiny guest house” on his land.

He wrote, “Off grid life is so crispy in Joshua Tree,” as the caption for a set of Instagram pictures showcasing his newest property.
