Disappointment for Fans as Shōgun’s Creators Might Not Think of Season 2!

Though Shōgun on FX was supposed to be a miniseries, it may be a White Lotus after garnering 9 million views in its first week of streaming. With those figures, the options are practically limitless. The show centers on Lord Yoshii Toranaga, a fictitious account of a 17th-century Japanese leader who battles for survival while his foes band together against him, based on James Clavell’s book of the same name.

But rather than expanding on the plot from the series one book, the writers would have to come up with fresh ones if they wanted to go on with a second season. A second season has not been confirmed or denied by FX. Here’s what the actors and crew have stated so far regarding a possible but unlikely second season before we get too worked up about it (even if it’s just a general non-Shōgun worry).

Will Season 2 of A Shōgun be Available on FX and Hulu?

As of yet, FX has not granted Shōgun a renewal for a second season. Despite the tremendous success of the program, a Season 2 renewal is unlikely. In February, showrunner and co-creator Justin Marks stated to The Direct that Season 1 concludes “exactly where the book ends.”

“I believe we convey the entirety of the book’s narrative. Finally, we reach the conclusion. Marks elaborated, “I hope those who have read the book will recognize that this is precisely where the book concludes.”

“And we are extremely ecstatic about that because [James] Clavell writes a very unexpected conclusion for the book.” Furthermore, it is, in some ways, exquisitely ambiguous. However, that is the nature of the stories we tell. I would like to add that it took us five years. This program predates both of our children. Indeed, it’s quite a bit.”

Marks expressed a comparable viewpoint regarding Season 2 during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in March. “A period was added to that sentence at the conclusion of the book where the story was situated,” he explained. “We both agreed that the book’s conclusion was one of the reasons we wanted to write it in the first place, and we arrived precisely where we wanted to be.”

He further stated that Shōgun differs from “usual television series” in that “we wouldn’t be in the writers’ room already, we’d be on set filming season two by now if we were in this position promoting it.”

Michaela Clavell, the daughter of Shōgun’s author James Clavell and executive producer, was more optimistic regarding the possibility of a second season. “As you are aware, the audience will indicate whether or not they are interested in that. We shall investigate. It is an excellent inquiry. She told the site, “I wish I knew the complete answer, but I do not.”

When is the First-Season Finale of Shōgun?

“A Dream of a Dream,” the Shōgun Season 1 finale, will premiere on April 23, 2024, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX and 12:01 a.m. ET/PT on Hulu. The episode synopsis states, “After a tragic death, Blackthorne finally considers the true nature of Toranaga’s plan.” Hulu is broadcasting Shōgun.
