Rolling Glass Down Stair TikTok Trend: The Internet has shown us that even strange things can be interesting. Livestreamed building work. Mixing indie music with obscure NBA clips. Even worse, in 2016, almost a million people watched live as Buzzfeed slowly crushed a watermelon with rubber bands.
In this long history of the internet, a new TikTok trend is watching glass things roll downstairs and, more importantly, seeing if and how they break.
I have to say that it’s pretty damn interesting. A few different accounts have started sharing these kinds of videos, which are a fun mix of ASMR and Dudes Rock, an internet meme that refers to things that are both wonderfully stupid and good for you.
Some people like it because the sounds of glass falling and breaking are strangely relaxing, while others, like me, feel the same way when they see someone throw a big rock off a bridge into the water. Like any other material in the Dudes Rock universe, this isn’t just for men. It’s the kind of thing that makes your lizard brain say, “Sweet.”

As this whole thing has become popular, people have joined in by putting together the original movies and reacting to each bottle or jar. There are people who can tell when a bottle will break, people who do something when a bottle does break, and, of course, a lot of jokes about the trend.
Even though this is a pretty niche trend, it’s not as rare as it used to be. Some of the videos of people breaking bottles have more than 5 million views. More than a million people watch reaction movies every day. Yes, brands have started making parody bottle-break movies, which is a sign that something is really becoming popular.
If you use TikTok, chances are you’ve seen these movies already or will soon. I like to watch and try to guess if any of the bottles will break. I think the key is to look at the bottle or jar to see if it has thick glass bumps. Those usually last longer. But I like it best when a beer bottle breaks just right on Step 1. It makes a wonderful whoosh of damage right away.
Just remember to be careful if you do this at home. Broken glass really is very sharp. And please don’t do this in a public place, like on the steps of your apartment building. You don’t want to go to the hospital and tell the doctor, “Well, Doc, it all started with a TikTok video.”
