Hoda Kotb Shares Why Embracing Motherhood in Her 50s Was the Perfect Choice

When Hoda Kotb was fifty years old, she decided to become a mother through adoption, and it was the best choice she had ever made. As she celebrated her 60th birthday, the Today with Hoda and Jenna presenter recently looked back on her life and told PEOPLE that she had a new motto after adopting her daughters: “right on time.”

Hoda had always desired to have a child, but she frequently battled emotions of inadequacy. When she was ready, her daughters came to her, and she would always be grateful for them.

According to Hoda Kotb, She Became a Mother “Right on Time”

When Hoda Kotb adopted her seven-year-old daughter Hailey in 2017, she was apprehensive about her age. However, after talking with her close friend Robin Roberts, her viewpoint was altered.

“‘Can you believe I’m going to be a mom in my 50s?’ I asked Robin. “That baby is right on time,” she responded to me.

When she adopted Hope, her youngest daughter, two years later, she realized she had nothing to worry about because of that slogan. The timing was ideal.

Some may think, ‘Oh, everyone around me is married, and I’m single. Why hasn’t it worked out for me?’ Or, “Why am I not employed there?” However, you have to forge your own path; you cannot exist on the timelines of others,” said Hoda.

“My life began in my 50s in many ways. As Bevy Smith frequently says, “It gets greater later”; for me, it did. And I was prepared for it when it happened.”

She knows that things happen when they are meant to, so for now, she is not fearful of what lies ahead.

“It’s about having faith that, at the appropriate moment, life will provide for your needs. You must have faith. All these good things are on their way to you; all you need to do is think you deserve them.”

Surrounded by her great friends and loving family, Hoda enjoyed an amazing 60th birthday. Although the host is immensely appreciative of her life, she acknowledged that things weren’t always this way.

She admitted that if someone had told her in her 40s that this would be her life as she approached 60, she wouldn’t have believed them.

Don’t get me wrong, I was thankful for what I had, but I also kind of thought that was all there would be, that my life was good enough, and that I didn’t deserve anything more. And I didn’t start to alter it until I was in my early 50s.”

That is mostly related to her daughters. Hoda had always desired a child, but she was unable to conceive following her breast cancer struggle. Even though it made her feel down, she didn’t allow it stop her from living the life she desired.

“I really stated to myself, ‘I want to be a parent,’ when I looked in the mirror. And I don’t think I would have opened myself up to it, let that love to flow in, and truly grown to believe I was deserving of it if I hadn’t had the confidence to do that—to picture it, create it, and say it aloud.”
