Julie Chrisley, who was once an icon of beauty and charm from the South, is currently stuck in a legal nightmare. By participating virtually in her impending resentencing hearing, the reality star—who rose to popularity on Chrisley Knows Best—hoped to escape the limelight of the courtroom.
Judge Eleanor L. Ross, however, has other ideas. Among them is for Julie to physically appear, handcuffed and prepared to face justice.
Julie Was Not Allowed For A Virtual Court Date
Julie claimed that traveling from the prison in Lexington, Kentucky, where she is serving her sentence would cause “undue physical hardship” in support of her request to forego the in-person hearing. She explained how she might be transferred by the Bureau of Prisons while shackled, either through a facility in Oklahoma City or a long, painful van ride.
However, Judge Ross was unconvinced by these requests for forgiveness. In a Writ of Habeas Corpus ad Prosequendum granted on August 7, the judge stipulated that Julie had to be present in person on September 25 in the Atlanta courtroom.
The directive was clear-cut: Julie Chrisley had to have her freedom restricted and appear in court each day until the hearing was over. She will be sent back to her cell to serve her remaining time in prison as soon as she is sentenced.
Julie and Todd Are Both Currently Serving Prolonged Prison Sentence
Todd Chrisley, Julie’s spouse, is no stranger to the spotlight or to courtroom disputes. Thanks to their popular reality show Chrisley Knows Best, which offered viewers an intimate glimpse into the life of the wealthy and eccentric Chrisley family, the pair became well-known.
They immediately rose to fame on reality TV because to their extravagant lifestyle and exaggerated personas.
Because of the show’s popularity, there were other spinoffs, and the Chrisleys appeared to have it all: wealth, celebrity, and a loyal following of fans. However, things weren’t quite as picture-perfect as they seemed behind the scenes.
The Chrisleys’ opulent life fell apart in 2019 after they were charged with several crimes, including fraud and tax evasion. The pair was charged with planning to evade taxes and conceal millions of dollars in income in order to deceive the IRS.
Julie and Todd tried their hardest to contest the charges, but they were both found guilty.
Todd was given a ten-year sentence, and Julie was given a six-year sentence. The Chrisleys’ convictions have been persistently appealed, notwithstanding a later reduction in their sentences.
The appeals court reversed Julie’s sentence last month after determining that there was insufficient evidence connecting her to offenses that occurred prior to 2007. She will now be sentenced again in District Court as a result.
Julie claimed that traveling from Kentucky to Georgia would be too exhausting and had intended to participate in this session via video conference. Even though the prosecution didn’t object to her motion, Judge Ross wasn’t persuaded by this reasoning.
Thus, Julie will return to court on September 25—this time as an in-person participant rather than virtually. The judge has made it quite clear that Julie has to be present, handcuffs and all, regardless of how difficult the trip may be.
It’s a long cry from the opulent, carefree lifestyle the Chrisleys used to show off on television. It serves as a sobering reminder that even reality TV celebrities are subject to the law as Julie gets ready to appear before the judge once more.
