The DC Comics live-action universe is now going through a metamorphosis, moving from the old shared universe that started with Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel to a new one that will debut with James Gunn’s Superman next summer. The Penguin, a new Max original series centered on Colin Farrell’s villainous character from 2022’s The Batman, will take place in the midst of all that.
The Penguin, too, isn’t really impacted by all of the corporate turmoil that has been going on, much as Batman was his own distinct franchise for the majority of the character’s on-screen history. That movie always kind of existed in its own little bubble. There’s no bigger property to be concerned about, then; in this nascent series that will premiere on Max later this year, there’s only Batman and now The Penguin.
When does The Penguin make its debut?
The Penguin is scheduled to debut on Max in September 2024, with new episodes to be released every week. A precise date for the premiere has not yet been announced. This season will consist of a total of eight episodes.
What is the Plot of The Penguin?
Naturally, The Penguin will concentrate on Oswald Cobblepot as he tries to assert his own authority following Carmine Falcone’s (John Turturro) death in The Batman. The Penguin follows up a few days after the film’s events, with Gotham still in ruins and all of the city’s criminal underworld trying to fill the gap left by Falcone’s passing. Sofia, the daughter of Falcone, desires to assert her own authority.
If The Penguin seems like a straight forward continuation of The Batman’s narrative, that’s because it is. However, the focus of this program is the Penguin, not Batman, and the only member of The Batman who has been confirmed to appear on this series is Oswald. (However, The Penguin will act as a prelude to a 2026 release of a Batman film starring Robert Pattinson.)
Although Matt Reeves, the director of The Batman, only received producer credit for The Penguin and did not direct any episodes, The Penguin’s gritty, noir-style look is obviously influenced by Reeves’ film. Thus, there is undoubtedly a consistent theme in both the tone and the narrative.
The Penguin may only have only one run of episodes because it is being marketed as a limited series. Nevertheless, that term isn’t the most reliable and might not mean anything because it’s been applied to series with numerous seasons a lot lately. (You can guarantee Max will produce a second season of The Penguin if the show’s ratings are insane.) Additionally, Warner Bros. has plenty of time to produce another season of The Penguin before the official Batman sequel, which is not scheduled to premiere until October 2026, if that’s their preference.
What is the Cast of The Penguin?
Colin Farrell plays the same character he played in The Batman, replete with a dramatic makeup makeover that had to have been quite difficult. Warner Bros. has put together a fairly good cast of veteran professional actors for The Penguin, yet the ensemble cast of The Batman lacks the star power of Farrell and company. Watch out for Clancy Brown and Shohreh Aghdashloo in the role of Salvatore and Nadia Maroni; they make a great team.
- Colin Farrell in the role of Penguin/Oswald Cobblepot
- Sofia Falcone played by Cristin Milioti
- Michael Kelly as Johnny Vitti, the Falcone underboss
- Salvatore Maroni played by Clancy Brown
- Nadia Maroni, played by Shohreh Aghdashloo
- Rhenzy Feliz as the driver and boyhood buddy of Oswald
- Eve Karlo, played by Carmen Ejogo
Does James Gunn’s new DC Universe include The Penguin?
Like the Joker before it, The Batman and The Penguin live in their own bubble, undisturbed by business intrigue, because they were always intended to be independent entities outside of the DC Extended Universe film franchise in principle.
In all honesty, though, we still don’t really know what Gunn has in mind for DC, and it’s unlikely that we will until we see his Superman movie the following summer. Though Season 1 of Peacemaker takes place in the previous DC reality, Season 2 will take place in the new universe and feature characters from the Superman movie. It is possible that we are witnessing a reboot within the DC world, similar to the numerous instances in the comics’ history.
However, since The Penguin debuted several months ahead of Superman, it might take some time before we learn more about that.
Is There Any Trailer for the Penguine?
Since production wrapped on The Penguin in February, we’ve gotten a couple teasers. Here’s the most recent one:
Conclusion
The DC Comics live-action universe is evolving from Zack Snyder’s vision to James Gunn’s new direction, starting with his Superman next summer. Meanwhile, “The Penguin” series, featuring Colin Farrell, debuts on Max in September 2024. This limited series, set in Gotham’s criminal aftermath post-Falcone, promises a gritty, noir-style narrative independent of the larger DC Universe.
