Disney+ has confirmed that Percy Jackson and the Olympians will return for a second season. However, it will not be accompanied by a film adaptation of Daughter of the Deep, as was initially planned.
Rick Riordan, the author of The Kane Chronicles, wrote on his website about how a planned Netflix version of the series was shelved. He stated that he is “not sorry” for going through the development process just to have the movie canceled, as he has “met many talented people and learned a lot about script development.”
Riordan then explained how something similar happened with Daughter of the Deep, another of his books due to be adapted into a film for Disney+. The author stated that there were no creative concerns, but that Disney’s streaming budget did not allow for the continuation of production on the picture.
“Similarly, Daughter of the Deep rights have reverted to me after being in script development as a feature at Disney+,” according to Riordan. No concerns were raised regarding the script or the team. I adored every single individual with whom we were collaborating. As far as I am aware, the decision was merely a financial one; producing Daughter would have been another costly endeavor.”
He further stated, “I understand that setbacks of this nature can be discouraging to fans, but they are frequent in the film industry and occur with greater frequency.” Producing anything, even during ideal circumstances, is an incredibly challenging endeavor.
I have deeply admired the producers, executives, and writers who adeptly maneuver through the challenges and complete projects. The future contains no unknown uncertainty for the Daughter. “I suppose we will simply have to observe the situation.”

Daughter of the Deep debuted in 2021 and quickly achieved New York Times bestseller status. The book is situated in a retrofuturistic world that draws inspiration from Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas. Its narrative centers around an academy student who becomes entangled in a cold war with a rival school after undertaking what was initially perceived as a weekend trial at sea for the class.
Could These Adaptations Wind Up Getting Made Elsewhere?
Based on his remarks, it appears that Riordan is still interested in seeing Daughter of the Deep produced into a movie. He also provided an update on the status of the canceled Kane Chronicles adaption, stating that while they are still “exploring other options,” they currently have nothing to report. One or both of these ideas may eventually be able to find success elsewhere if Percy Jackson and the Olympians continue to be successful.
Regarding Percy Jackson and the Olympians, a second season has been confirmed, however, no release date has been announced as of yet. Disney+ offers the first season for streaming.
