Caligula (1979) has been completely reimagined in this production of the film. The foundation for this new version, which was prepared by author and historian Thomas Negovan, was comprised of 96 hours of material that had never been seen before and had been recovered many years after it had been released.
However, rather than extending sections with the new footage, the entire film was recut from scratch in order to create a new version that is completely different from the original and does not include a single frame from the earliest version.
This was done with the intention of achieving the closest possible resemblance to the original script written by Gore Vidal. A great deal of attention has been paid to the selection of alternative footage in order to not only alter the mood of particular situations but also to respect the instincts of the actors appearing in them.
Additionally, visual effects were utilized in order to improve scenes and to substitute the low-cost sets and backgrounds throughout the film. The application of artificial intelligence technologies allowed for the restoration of dialogue performances that had previously been rendered worthless due to the presence of background noises.
To accompany this revised version of the movie, a brand new musical score was also written. This version was initially intended to have a limited theatrical release in the latter half of the year 2020; nevertheless, it was ultimately presented for the first time at the Cannes Film Festival in the year 2023.
