Why David McCallum’s Family Calls Him Dr. Death Behind The reason Is

The series NCIS’s main focus is to ground itself in reality. Admittedly, it doesn’t always hit the mark, such as when it gives a false impression of how crime scene investigations really work.

But for the most part, the series takes steps not to stray too far from how the NCIS team would operate, partly thanks to its use of real-life agents as technical advisors. Also, some of the cast members of the show have done additional work by doing their own research. And that was certainly the case for David McCullum. Speaking with Buzz Magazine, the actor said he constantly researched the medical conditions and procedures that his character Ducky would call and perform on “NCIS.”

However, since Ducky often works in the realm of death on the show, McCallum’s extensive research included tons of notes on the serious subject, the actor said in the interview.

And as a result, the McCallum family came up with a unique surname. McCallum told Buzzy Mag, “My family has accused me – they call me Dr. Death Now.”

“ I have yards and yards of books on the subject of death. When we started this show, I didn’t know anything about pathology, and I didn’t know anything about N.C.I.S.I learned all of those special agents’ commitments to excellence, and then we brought that into everything we do as a team.”

While it has garnered some teasing from loved ones, McCallum’s deep dive into the medical field has been effective, as it has helped Ducky feel authentic in her duties on “NCIS.”
