Robert Lane Saget, better known as Bob, was born on May 17, 1956, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Robert Lane Saget and his wife, Mary. His ancestors are of Jewish descent. Father Benjamin worked as a supermarket executive and mother Rosalyn “Dolly” worked as a hospital administrator for the family business. While growing up, he lived in California for a short period of time before returning to Philadelphia, where he attended Abington Senior High School.

After graduating from high school in 1975, he went on to study cinema at Temple University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. His student production “Through Adam’s Eyes,” a documentary about a young boy who underwent reconstructive facial surgery, was recognized with a Student Academy Award for merit. In 1978, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Los Angeles.

While Saget began his career in stand-up comedy, relentlessly traveling the country, he first found fame on television. In 1981, he appeared on “The Merv Griffin Show.” In early 1987, he joined “The Morning Program” on CBS, but it was his role as Danny Tanner on “Full House” that made him a household figure. From the third season on, the show was continuously listed in the Nielsen Top 30. Its popularity has grown due to syndicated replays. A widowed father raising three girls with the support of his brother-in-law Jesse and best friend Joey, Saget plays Danny Tanner. The show had eight seasons and 192 episodes from 1987 to 1995.

In 1989, Saget became the anchor of “America’s Funniest Home Videos,” a post he held until 1997. In the early 1990s, he worked on both “Full House” and AFV. Saget directed “For Hope” for ABC in 1996. It was inspired by his sister, Gay Saget, who died three years before from scleroderma. In 1998, Saget directed “Dirty Work”, starring Norm Macdonald and Artie Lange. It was severely panned and did poorly at the box office. Due to Lange’s later prominence on “The Howard Stern Show,” it has become a cult favorite. From October 2001 to May 2002, Saget co-starred in “Raising Dad” on The WB with Kat Dennings, Brie Larson, and Jerry Adler.

Saget began voicing characters on “How I Met Your Mother” in 2005. He narrated the series until 2014 as the future Ted Mosby. From 2006-2008, he hosted “1 vs. 100” on NBC. ‘That Ain’t Right’ was dedicated to his father, who had died earlier that year from congestive heart failure problems. “Farce of the Penguins” was written, directed, and starred in by Saget and was a spoof of the 2005 nature documentary “March of the Penguins”. From 2005 to 2010, Saget starred in four episodes of the HBO series “Entourage” as a spoof of himself.

Personal Life

From May 1982 to November 1997, Saget married Sherri Kramer. They have a total of three children as a couple.

Kelly Rizzo was his wife in 2018. He died in January 2022, and they stayed married.

Bob was a member of the Scleroderma Research Foundation’s board of directors, and he was very involved in raising funding and awareness for the disease that his sister had.
