It took years for Netflix’s ambitious cyberpunk series Altered Carbon to be adapted from Richard K. Morgan’s novel. Altered Carbon debuted on Netflix in February 2018 with a 10-episode first season, allowing the series’ producers to go all out with sci-fi mayhem. The show, which is set in an alternate reality where humans have discovered a means to digitise their consciousness, was instantly renewed for a second season by Netflix. In February 2020, Netflix released Altered Carbon season 2, prompting speculation about a possible third season.
Altered Carbon’s third season has yet to be confirmed. After the season 2 finale, there are lots of unanswered concerns that may be addressed in a third chapter in the Altered Carbon universe. First, several of the show’s major characters were mercilessly killed off in the season 2 finale (much like HBO’s fantasy drama Game of Thrones did), so who will return for a possible season 3? Is it true that the major characters’ stacks are gone, or will they return if only sleeve damage?
Many questions will go unanswered until a new set of episodes is released on Netflix. Here’s all we know thus far about a prospective Altered Carbon season 3.
When Is Altered Carbon Season 3 Coming Out?
Season 3 of Altered Carbon has yet to be confirmed by Netflix, so no release date has been set. A few pieces of information can be used to build a puzzle.
It debuted on Netflix on February 2, 2018. The second season premiered on February 27, 2020. On March 19, 2020, Altered Carbon: Resleeved will be released as an anime. Because Netflix is famously secretive about its audience metrics, the only data points available to influence assumptions about a release date to relate to the series’ exorbitant production costs. Netflix has been cancelling shows more indiscriminately lately, so Altered Carbon will need to have a strong second season to get renewed. However, the corporation seems devoted to the core IP, so maybe the odds are in Altered Carbon’s favour.
In any case, viewers shouldn’t consider Netflix’s silence as a warning. Season 2 was ordered five months after season 1, so viewers should wait until July to write obituaries.
Season 3 of Altered Carbon is unlikely to come on Netflix until early 2022 if it is renewed. Having to wait two years for a season you’ll probably binge-watch in a weekend or less isn’t tempting, but Altered Carbon season 3 should be well worth the wait. You can rewatch the second chapter, the first, or the spin-off universe.
The Cast of Altered Carbon Season 3?
It’s too early to know who might be cast in Altered Carbon season 3 because no announcement has been made and no casting selections have been made or even hinted at. However, the humanoid AI Edgar Poe (Chris Conner) is said to have backed up O.G. Kovacs (Byron Mann) before his stack was destroyed. Showrunner Alison Schapker confirmed this in an IGN interview.
You think Kovacs is coming back, but in what sleeve? “We all liked the end of season 1 when Kovacs gives Ortega [Elias] Ryker’s sleeve, and then all you see are these boots walking out of the elevator.” he said “And we wanted to keep that promise in season 2. We also enjoyed the concept of Poe, who has been fighting degradation all season, having his noble moment where he sacrifices himself while also copying Kovacs. Here is his stack, Takeshi Kovacs’ consciousness. But which sleeve…”
Anthony Mackie, who played Kovacs in season 2, is expected to return for season 3. Sadly, since Mackie replaced Joel Kinnaman after the first season, it’s unlikely he’ll return. Mackie may occur in flashbacks. Aside from that, he told The Hollywood Reporter he’s not done with Altered Carbon: “I intend to bring Kovacs back next season. I’m not ready to leave the show.”
Season 3 should see Will Yun Lee as “Kovacs Prime,” Chris Conner as Poe, Renée Elise Goldsberry as Quellcrist Falconer, Simone Missick as bounty hunter Trepp, and Dina Shihabi as Dig 301. It’s unclear if Dichen Lachman, who plays Kovacs’ sister Reileen Kawahara, will return. Season 3 of Altered Carbon will likely feature new characters, including a new Takeshi Kovacs.
There’s been a new rumour that Joker and Deadpool 2 actress Zazie Beetz would be cast in Takeshi Kovacs’ upcoming sleeve. Allegedly, the series creator Laeta Kalogridis told The Wrap in 2018: “Changing your gender becomes much easier if you don’t have to do it surgically. It at least changes. You’re still in an alien body. We’ve just scratched the surface of the possibility of being able to reconstruct the physical self in various ways.”
Fans should wait for confirmation from a reliable news site before proclaiming Beetz an official member of the Altered Carbon season 3 cast.
Which Altered Carbon Season Is Best?
Your idea on the plot of a possible Altered Carbon season 3 is as good as anyone’s — including Schapker’s. According to Schapker, “I have requested, but we’re waiting for Netflix. We lack a pickup. We’re seasonal. I need a season 3. I’m a big fan of directions, but I’m not sure how much I can help. But we’re all set!”
What happened to Kovacs and his sister Reileen is the most critical mystery from Altered Carbon season 2. Everyone wants to see Mackie return, regardless of the character he’s portraying, and it’s not out of the question if the creators decide to do so. As long as more sleeves resemble Mackie, they can write his persona into a narrative. Until season 3 is officially announced, we know that what’s dead doesn’t necessarily stay dead — as long as the stack is fine.
