The Way of The Househusband’s Animation Style Is So Controversial

The Way of the Househusband is indeed the latest addition to Netflix’s increasing collection of original animes, but its animation style has sparked debate among viewers. While some other Netflix original animes, such as The Seven Deadly Sins and Devilman Crybaby, have received positive reviews, The Way of the Househusband had already received mixed reviews. Fans seem to either enjoy the utterly ridiculous comedy or that have been turned off by the anime’s unique, non-moving comic style of animation. The animations in The Way of the Househusband has become one of the most divisive aspects of the series. Was the animation a stylistic choice or a hint that Netflix skimped on the budget again for show?

The Way of The Househusband

The Way of the Househusband is supported by numerous manga of the same name and follows Tatsu, an ex-yakuza boss formerly known as “the Immortal Dragon.” Tatsu now lives the life of a househusband instead of commanding the streets with an iron hand. He is completely dedicated to looking after his lovely wife, Miku, who is a successful designer, and their household. The quirky Netflix comedy follows the “Immortal Dragon” as he adjusts to his new life by attending culinary classes, cleaning the house, planning Miku’s birthday, staying in shape, and caring for Gin, their troublesome cat.

Other fans, on the other hand, are critical of the series’ unmoving animation style, which has been compared to a choppy PowerPoint presentation. Instead of traditional animation, camera panning is used to create the majority of the movement in the presentation. The Netflix anime has a lot of one-star evaluations on review sites like IMDb, with many calling the animation poor and arguing it detracts from the show’s humour, and the series has gone popular on Twitter as people insult the animation. Despite the fact that the stationary animation approach was exposed in the teaser for Netflix’s The Way of the Househusband, fans were astonished to see that the entire series had been animated in this manner. Audiences began to question if Netflix had kept the budget for this much-anticipated production low.

The Way of The Househusband

Nevertheless, choosing an animation style is more complicated than merely an issue of money. The aesthetic directives originated from the anime’s producer, according to director Kon Chiaki in an interview with Natalie. The animation was designed to look like a manga panel, yet manga panels do not move. The simple animation in The Way of the Househusband is designed to let the deadpan humorous timing and great voice performance take centre stage. Strong voices from series like Attack on Titan and The Seven Deadly Sins appear in both the Japanese and English voice casts, adding to the show’s comedy (Kenjiro Tsuda and Jonah Scott singing “Happy Birthday” as Tatsu are ridiculously hilarious) and contributing to the characters’ peculiar charms. The manga’s writer, Kousuke Oono, even applauded the animation style for preserving the manga’s deadpan humorous pacing.

The Way of the Househusband was never intended to be a highly detailed anime, therefore the unmoving animation may not appeal to all audiences. It’s a show designed for casual viewing, with its bizarre comedy, fast-paced skits, and short episodes making it ideal for those looking for just some light entertainment without even any serious storey lines to follow. Having Season 2 of The Way of the Househusband on Netflix, just history will prove if somehow the series will stick to its manga-style graphics after the reaction on the internet.
