Sharkboy and Lavagirl made a comeback in We Can Be Heroes, but will there be another film? Robert Rodriguez has worked in a variety of genres throughout the course of his career, from westerns like El Mariachi to horror films like From Dusk Till Dawn and even neo-noir crime films like Sin City.
Rodriguez has also dabbled in the world of children’s fantasy films, beginning in 2001 with Spy Kids, which spawned a franchise of four films and one animated television program. Rodriguez made The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D after the popularity of Spy Kids, but it didn’t use the same impact and was widely panned for its plot and visual effects.
Sharkboy and Lavagirl made a cameo appearance in the standalone sequel We Can Be Heroes, which introduces a new generation of superheroes, more than a decade after the film’s premiere. We Can Be Heroes depicts the children of Earth’s superheroes (including Guppy, Sharkboy, and Lavagirl’s daughter) as they band together to save their parents when alien invaders take them.
The young heroes are pushed to learn to work together in order to preserve their parents and the Earth, as the aliens have other ideas. We Can Be Heroes received mixed reviews, but had a far more enthusiastic response from the crowd than The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl.
Finally, We Can Be Heroes achieves its objective of entertaining a younger audience while still being a film that adults can appreciate, especially after all of the jokes and references to not only Marvel and DC superheroes but also the President of the United States. Can we anticipate another Sharkboy and Lavagirl film soon, given the popularity of We Can Be Heroes thus far?
Will There Be Another Sharkboy and Lavagirl?
We Can Be Heroes was such a hit that Netflix didn’t waste any time announcing that a sequel is in the works, with Robert Rodriguez returning as writer and director (and maybe more, keeping true to his moniker “the one-man film crew”). It’s likely that Sharkboy and Lavagirl may return, but they shouldn’t be expected to take the lead, as they did in the first film (played by Vivien Blair). Because We Can Be Heroes had a greater plot and was a more commercial picture, it’s doubtful that a true Sharkboy and Lavagirl film will be created, but it’s possible.still appear in small parts in the sequel.
Who Could Be In the Cast of Sharkboy and Lavagirl 2?
The alien invasion and capture of the Heroics were part of the training process to bring their offspring together and educate them to work together, according to the twist in We Can Be Heroes., since the Earth requires a new (and younger) generation of Heroics.
Assuming no characters are replaced, We Can Be Heroes 2 will see the youthful cast return, thus fans can expect to see YaYa Gosselin, Lyon Daniels, Nathan Blair, Andy Walker, Lotus Blossom, Dylan Henry Lau, Vivien Blair, Isaiah Russell-Bailey, Akira Akbar, and Andrew Diaz. It’s unclear whether the original Heroics crew will be participating in this new adventure in any manner, but fans will undoubtedly want to see Pedro Pascal reprise his role as Marcus Moreno.
What Could Expect from Sharkboy and Lavagirl 2?
The premise of We Can Be Heroes 2 is unknown, however it is believed to follow the young Heroics on a new quest, presumably not including saving their parents once more. We Can Be Heroes shares many similarities with the original Spy Kids film, and if Robert Rodriguez continues in this vein, the sequel may have the young Heroics embark on a risky mission that may need their parents’ assistance, but without them being the main focus of the tale.
When Will Be Sharkboy and Lavagirl Release?
We Can Be Heroes 2 has yet to be given a release date, and with the coronavirus outbreak putting many projects on hold, it’s difficult to determine when the film will be released. In addition, Robert Rodriguez is already working on other important projects, including Disney+’s The Book of Boba Fett, a spin-off of The Mandalorian, where he will serve as executive producer (and it’s not out of the question that he may direct a few of episodes). We Can Be Heroes 2 might be released in mid-to-late 2022, based on the release of The Book of Boba Fett in late 2021.
Fans Are Excited About the Sequel of Sharkboy and Lavagirl
We Can Be Characters will include the two colorful heroes from many people’s childhoods, according to Netflix. While Sharkboy and Lavagirl will not be the focus of the film, they will be there and will have plenty of opportunity to demonstrate their individual abilities. Fans are eager to revisit their childhood, so perhaps their roles are more than cameos.
One Twitter user was more reserved in their reaction to the news, though they did confess to being “very eager” to watch We Can Be Heroes when it premieres on Netflix on January 1. They stated, “Sharkboy and Lavagirl were two of my favorite characters. I’m not anticipating a cinematic masterpiece, but you never know. I’m hoping for a good surprise.”
Though the mere existence of Sharkboy and Lavagirl is enough to pique anyone’s interest, it’s still unknown what their responsibilities will entail. Twitter user @Edu Alvarez1188, on the other hand, has only one request: “We need to get the Sharkboy Dream music [remastered].”
“If 2021 isn’t good, at least we’ll always have the sharkboy and lavagirl sequel to fall back on,” Twitter user @xenoworth commented, while @VelocityPD_ sensibly added, “if 2021 is starting with a sequel to Sharkboy and Lavagirl, we might predict a decent year.”
